I had a pair of diced hose from J.Higgins. They are synthetic and were not measured to my 16" calves. Being too tight, I gave them away.
I replaced them with some reasonably priced diced hose from Skye Highland Outfitters (See Panache's thread). I have been very pleased with thiese custom fit hose.

Jock - I started this thread back in 2006 and I assure you I have not been worrying too much in the intervening three years.

The Higgins machine-made diced hose are straight-legged, not shaped, so that the pattern is quite distorted around the calves unless you have very thin calves. They would work OK with girls perhaps (though girls who do Highland dancing can have large calves too).
Boy those MacLaren tartan hose match perfectly!!! What a great find.
I recently bit the bullet and ordered full tartan bespoke/custom hose.
They cost $200 but are well worth it. They did an admirable job matching the tartan's odd colours and the fit is perfect. (Well it would have been perfect, but for the fact that I lost 40 pounds between ordering and receiving the hose!)
Here they are...

I have been researching tartan argyll hose for nearly a year and pricing, quality, turnaround, etc.. in that regards. The only off the rack ones I could find on sale were at house of tartan which had limited styles and sizes on sale, none of which met my needs. The Henderson connection above seems like a reasonable alternative, if you can truly work directly with the manufacturer to keep the price reasonable. may have to look into that for future orders.
The best deal I ahve found otherwise is Keltoi Gaelic Clothing (one of our xmarks sponsors) , who has a nice variety of custom made hose at a reasonable price including custom argylls and diced hose, and between the 10% discount John offers and the US-Canadian dollar exchange rate (fluctuating right now) they can be had for a reasonable price. I ordered a pair of custom in my Forrester Modern tartan argyll, and John even ordered a swatch of the tartan from STrathmore Mills so he could match the colors properly to my kilt. I also ordered a pair of ancient blue/ancient green diced hose to be custom made to match my Ancient Douglas kilt. And since I simultaneously ordered a Kingussie kilt in Ancient Caledonia, and the total exceeded a certain amount, shipping is free too. Now just jonesing away in eager anticipation and wondering where on John's list I stand for my kilt.
Will obviously post pics of all hose and kilts when they arrive.
