I Think I may go for the 20"(Still a huge screen) with
2.16 GHz
2GB RAM
256 Graphic Card
500GB HD
Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

I think the basic Mac software will surfice for now. I only use Photshop for basics (On my PC)anyway I might spash out on Apeture at a later date.

I think Openoffice works well with MAC any thoughts on that software ?
what about iWorks ?

I only do basic stuff with the software I have now anyway. It's mostlly pictures and Internet not to mention Music

Before you decide on Aperture, look at Adobe's Lightroom first.

There are free beta versions available for download on the Adobe site.

Aperture seemed like it would work as a comprehensive photo filing system for me but I'm still shopping around.

Hi David,

I think you are making a good choice. Like alot of folks, I have been using Apple computers since 85. I currently have a G4 iMac and 2 ipods (3G and Nano).

Photoshop is so much nicer on a Mac than a PC. The only hitch at the moment is that the Adobe products run a little slower on the Intel machines. They are not universal yet...in 07 they say.

Before you decide on Aperture, look at Adobe's Lightroom first.

Aperture can be a real resource hog - so until Apple re-writes the code I'd take a serious look at Lightroom too. Just remember its beta software - so its still under a great deal of development.

I was given an iMac PowerPC G4 not too long ago by a rich uncle of mine who didn't like it. I'm an IT guy myself with lots o' experience with Winblows and Linux going way back. I was excited because I wanted to see what all the hype was about with OS X.

Overall, it's a very nice machine. The hardware is very sound, but since I can't find software for it that I don't have to pay out the **** for, I think it's Ebay bound.

Try VersionTracker, the MacOrchard, and the GNU Mac OS X Public Archive site.

Need an image editor? The GIMP is free, and works on the Mac.
Need GIS viewing capabilities? GRASS is free, and works on the Mac.
Many network utilities are free for the Mac.

And a lot of Mac software is available as shareware, for $10-$20 per license.

Sorry, what I meant by software was OEM reload media, to take it back to factory specs. Those I have found here and there for sale, and of course, the local Apple store tried to sell me the new version for $129, but I don't want to shell out that much for what amounts to a test machine.

The OEM OS actually may not be the current OS (10.4)

I'm looking for good contact management software before I cross over. I currently use ACT6. I'm trialing Filemaker, but first glance it's nowhere near as good.

Any ideas?
