As Jerry states,
The USMC Tartan can be worn by anyone wishing to show support for the USMC.
I like the Tartan, and plan to get one.....
And I wonder what my father would think (in USMC during Korea, though never made it past Hawaii!).

Gents, let's not take off down the "Who can wear what" argument. Some people don't feel it's proper to wear a tartan they don't have a connection to. Others do. The Leatheneck tartan is not official to the USMC though it is embrassed. Wear it or don't wear it. If you wear it be respectful of it. That is all any Marine would expect if you choose to wear it.

Cavscout... excellent post!
It is a "universal" tartan. It's also one of the most beautiful tartans that I've ever seen. I know one gent in Maryland who wears his daily in respect for a friend that served in Afghanistan and didn't make it home. Who would have a problem with that? I know another guy in a band from California that wears his in support of the service.
As for the Army tartan... remember that Stillwater chooses to run limited amounts of tartans and offerings at their discretion. IT COSTS MONEY to stock kilts in numerous tartans. You have to remember that these kilts are pre-made so that they're in your hands in no time. That's the nature of the business in pre-mades. You're giving-up tartan choices for price and speed... all of this without suffering looks and quality.
Jerry... nice choice on the tartan! You've "hit" the right run again!

Wow am I confused.....
beerbecue,
I was just speaking for myself. I support all those who serve our country but would like to have a connection to a service tartan if I was to wear it. Now my Grandfather and all 7(!) of my Grandmother's brothers served in the Navy in World War II, I would be very happy to wear the gorgeous blue Navy tartan.
No confusion intended!
Cheers

Hey Hachiman,
Don't think anyone would question you wearing the Leatherneck tartan out of respect for some of the men who saved you the chore of learning to speak Japanese.

Just for reference, the proper term is "Former Marine". "Ex" implys that you are no longer a Marine. The "Former" says you are still a Marine, you're just not doing it right now

My point was that there is (at least some) evidence that there are more potential sales for an Army tartan, based on what has been posted here about military experience (and face it including Reserves and NG, there are almost 10 times the number of soldiers to Marines). May not be true as most marines have the "I'm a Marine for live" attitude, and most soldiers will say, "Yeah I was in the Army."
What would be really great is if there was some way, maybe a forum of some kind, where people could discuss tartans and kilts and the like. That way companies like SWK USAK and the like could put out different tartans without just randomly guessing. (I do applaud SWK for trying to put out tartans that the other made to wear kilt companies dont have - Safron, Lamont, now USMC)
(Not wanting to hijack the thread, but what ever happened to the pajama kilt?

I'm sure Xmarks members aren't Jerry's only source of business though. From the sounds of it, he chose the Leatherneck tartan due to requests and research. It may be that several hundreds of people who don't post on Xmarks emailed him to ask about the leatherneck, whereas only 10's of people emailed about the army tartan.
I presume from Jerry's data, the Leatherneck was the best move for him right now.

hmmm just so you know there is no such thing as an Ex-Marine... unless they are dead....
for all of you questioning weather or not to get one because you have"no connection" the USMC tartan is not Officially recognized by the Marine Corps... just a little FYI
As a Marine I say Get One!
As Marines we have served in almost ever country there for you all have a connection to us somewhere, we were there... i know we do joint training with the Aussies in fact that's one of the best ports!
you can Honor those that served and protected our country against Foreign and Domestic enemies!
besides you all know that if you clicked on this it was because you wanted a Stillwater!
