Well, I haven't seen the part of my face under the beard for at least 10 years, but on the neck, this is my setup:
Old fashioned, yes. But that's the way I roll

This is the gear that shaved millions of men for over 60 years and exactly what I remember my father using back in the 1950's.
I didn't realize it was still available!
Cool!

That razor is a genuine original. I bought it at an antique store about 15 years ago. Cleaned the case as best I could and auoclaved the razor itself. As long as men used these, it's amazing how difficult it is to find the blades nowadays. I used to have a non-adjustable one of the same era, but I think my first wife still has it. Got that one in the 80's when my Great Grandfather died. Once I found the adjustable, though, I never looked back. It's great. The newer plastic heads don't hold heat. That's the best part of the old design. Once you heat it in the hot water, it stays hot and melts the foam so it glides ever so smoothly. Good designs never truly go out of style. Unfortunately, they're harder and harder to find these days. With A.I.D.S. and the like, antique stores rarely have old razors anymore. There's always eBay though! Just remember to take great care to sterilize one of these. If you have a friend like me who works at a dental or medical office or a tattoo parlor, the autoclave is best. But I would imagine that 10 minutes in a pan of boiling water would probably do the trick.
Here's a couple eBay links:
Nice one in the box
Absolut gem!
Another real nice one

I'm one of those with that tender red-head's skin and a rally scruffy, tough beard. I have tried lots of stuff over the years with mixed success.
Currently it's the Neutrogena shave gel...this is by far THE best stuff I've ever used and my eighteen year old son is using the clear-skin-acne-fixer-upper version of the same thing with great success. The disposable razor of choice is currently the Schick X-treme 3...get it...three blades. I got a sample of that current Gilette thingie that has five or whatever blades and it worked pretty impressively the first three shaves....after that it got a bit rough and that doesn't really justify laying out the 7+ bucks for four new blades to me.
HOW you shave is probably more important than what you use...I've heard a few studies about this...shave with the grain?...yeah...but when I do shave I like to get a really close shave so I break that rule (carefully) every time. I once heard a dermatologist on a TV show say that you should shave with the non-razor holding hand in your pocket; that is that you should avoid stretching your skin this way and that while you're shaving. Don't know about this one...mixed results.
But that Neutrogena stuff is really the max...
Best

My boxers dont have pockets, lol.
I liked the mach X razors but the cost of the refills is crazy. I use an old sensor (all on the handle) with gel shaving foam. I got like 5 or 6 mach 3s that were sent to me to try out and a schick quattro that I can't complain about too much but the fact I can only shave once or twice and the blade is dull.

I've used a large number of various razors over the years, and I've come to the conclusion that the razor itself isn't anywhere near as important as the prep and follow-up.
First, condition your beard just like the hair on your head - it softens it.
For a "full clean shave," like for weddings, funerals, and business meetings, I do a lot more than my regular daily shave.
I've had the best results with a mug and brush with Burt's Bees Bay Rum Shaving Soap (alas, no longer manufactured, but I've got three cakes remaining), very warm water (not HOT!), and don't pull the skin tight.
One pass with the grain, and a second pass against the grain.
Follow up with a good aftershave balm. Again, I like the Burt's Bees Bay Rum, and they don't make the aftershave any more either... Two bottles left.
I use a Wahl trimmer to neaten the remaining beard.
For "average" neck-cleaning shaving, I've got a Braun Activator 8595. It gets close enough to be comfortable and to keep the wife happy, and it's fast. It doesn't get anywhere near as clean as a regular blade, though.
Oh, and it's a self-cleaner. The charging stand contains a cleaning cartridge.
