Welcome Kat, from just up the road in Asheville NC.

The pattern that MacWage mentioned was the one I looked at when starting my first sporran. Don't be too hung up on having everything "just right"...individuality is also a virtue that I try to teach my children. Take a look at the many photos available and just make up your own design given the limitations of your materials adn working with the skills and equipment that you have access to. Size and hardware are all flexible. Use what's available, follow your heart, and each one you make will be different!

Thank you. I'm rather interested in seeing how this is going to turn out. Now just to get the pelt right *LOL*

Glad to see so many folks close to home here.

I'm also going to be helping him learn more about the heavy athletics. My biggest concern is making sure he doesn't hurt himself. He is a bit too old for the "kiddie" games but still far too young, at age 11, for anything full sized. One friend suggested landscape timbers for Cabers. Something small enough for him to sling without the risks. Any suggestions about a Hammer? Its his favorite event but I'm not sure if letting him swing something around is safe for not just him but me too! I have visions of laying flat on my back with a huge lump on my forehead.

    Thanks again.

    Kat

G'day Kat from Australia. I liked
"My son wants a sporran, but I told him he has to make his first one himself. I'm going to take him through tanning the hide and all that..."
and myself and the rest looking fwd to the process in detail.
    Welcome.
