I'll try to return this thread to it's original intention.. OK,,,
This teen girl from Glasgow is no different than many teen girls here in America. It sounds as though she doesn't really know what she likes, she allows the trends of pop culture to dictate her every waking desire and beliefs.
Now, the very first time I wore a kilt my Grandfather was present. He had Scottish parents from Glasgow and he was born here in the USA about seven years after they migrated from Glasgow in 1906. The words out of his mouth were: "Danny, my mother would proud of you!" She, Great Grandmother Nellie McCluskey Williamson was from Glasgow.

The majority of the Miners travelled through SF to get supplies etc. before going into the "hills". Sacramento was pretty much just an outpost (i.e Sutter's Fort), and the mining towns were not much either. Levi Strauss didn't do well at mining, but thought of using the canvas to make pants that could put up to the abuse of mining without being destroyed.
I think the young lady was speaking off the top of her young head, and we all remember how we "knew it all" back then!

My daughter is 22 and she thinks my kilts are cool.
Last week I had a fellow from Glasgow on my bus. He was in town to visit his daughter who was in the hospital here. We had a nice conversation about all sorts of things, and I asked him what he thought about people in other countries wearing kilts. He said as long as they had some kind of connection to Scotland or Ireland, he thought it was great! He said he only wears his for special occasions, but didn't have any problem with someone who wears them all the time.

I wear kilts because I want to, not because 1 of my toe nails is half Scottish.

So, there was this girl in Glasga, eh? Wasn't that our point of departure? And she thought kilts were silly, or Americans in kilts were silly? Wasn't that it? Ah, yes. My days of being heavily influenced by what teenage girls think of fashion, they ended about twenty years ago. And moderately off topic---I find Dreadbelly's comment about his sgian dubh being a crochet needle to be hilarious! (In a good way, Dreadbelly!)

As a Glaswegian born & bred I neither think the kilt silly nor Americans who wear it!!!!
This wee lassie is obviously a bit confused. The kilt is not just the Scots to wear. As our American cousins have proved. It is a garment to wear whenever and by whoever. That is it's beauty.
I love the kilt and as was said by a previous poster in Scotland you will see millions of them over the next week or so. You will also see millions of then during the first few months of the year as the rugby home internationals are played.
I have worn my kilt in many countries including America and I have been received with grace and much conversation no matter where I have gone.
I would like to ask the question of this wee Glesga lassie. What would you think if it was an American wearing it in Glasgow? I contend there is no difference.
Viva La Kilt anywhere by anyone !!!!!!
