The only time I have seen women or kids wearing kilts is if they are doing highland dancing or competing in events. Normally, the women wear kilted dresses which go to the floor.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that "Highland dress is free dress" and that there are no real rules regarding what can be worn. My thought is, if it fits her, let her wear it, and with pride and flair and (dare I say it?) panache!

For those who don't know...i'm female. And yep, I wear men's kilts. Right now it's only the contempoary/urban variety. I don't have a wool tartan tank yet, as I'm still not sure it's practical for me.
A ladies long kilted skirt is too formal for my "rock & roll" lifestyle, and well...I just don't have the legs to pull off the mini-kilt look.
My workman's UK is about darn near a pefect garment for me. The right length, the right netral color that goes with the rest of my wardrobe, and super durable, and has a ton of pockets.
I have an AK, I find it's similar in design to a UK, but it dresses up a bit better than the UK. As well, I have a black Tripp kilt that is covered in chrome hardware and while very goth, it works great for a night out clubbing.
In short, yes I know they are traditionally a mens garment, but it's just not an issue for someone like me who's being wearing all kinds of other men's clothes besides kilts.
cheers,
Cloves

When I started wearing kilts regularly my mom took me aside and told me of her jouney to Canada from Scotland by boat. She wore a kilt for the entire trip, she never said that it was a kilted skirt, it was a kilt. I figure if its good enough for my mom, when she was in Scotland, than thats good enough for me.

I'm going to vote; absolutely not. Women, unless involved in Highland Dance or piping have absolutely no business wearing the kilt. It's wrong and there are no two ways about it. Those here who answered and feel that women should wear kilts and agreed to the practice probably didn't read the intro to this site, maybe I missed something but where in this does it mention anything about women taking over the only real man's garment?:
X Marks the Scot is a community of kilt wearers and those who encourage the wearing of kilts. Kilts are a man's garment and it is our goal to promote the wearing of the kilt in more than just the "Highland Games" situation. This is not a forum for men looking to wear womens clothing* nor is it a forum for other types of men's un-bifurbricated garments. If you want to know more about kilts then you have come to the right place!
* I doubt that it meant was for women wanting to wear men's garments either.
And why are we even discussing it?
Chris.

If a woman wants to dress like a man it is her buisness.
I ask only one favor if you are asked let them know it is a man's garmet just to help those of us who have to fight the prejudices about men wearing the kilt for the kilt's sake.

Oddly enough, I read the intro to the site this morning after seeing it by accident. (Normally I link directly to the forum.) I thought it was a very interesting element to this discussion so I'm glad you posted it.
