Thanks for the great pic of the old Dog and Gun Alex,
Will forward it to my brother and sisters.
For you RAF History buffs, my father wrote home from Carlisle Cumberland on July 24, 1942 when he was a 22 year old boy from Livingston, Montana who learned to fly in the civilian pilot program and enlisted in the Royal Air Force when the war broke out. He'd already been given a medical discharge from the Navy in 1937 for some mysterious reason and the U.S. forces wouldn't have him until they took him from the RAF in September 1942 and made him a Second Lieutenant. When he wrote the letter he was flying Hurricanes as a Flying Sergeant doing Sector Reconnaisance as a member of the 59th Operational Training Unit of the RAF.
"Most of my playmates have peddled off to the nearest pub, a small rural enterprise, about a mile down the lane, labeled, "The Dog and Gun," better known as the "Canine and Cannon." It boasts a mdiocre ale and an attractive barmaid. This is hear say. I have yet to visit it myself. If I finish this [letter] in good order, I may throw over my monastic existence and splash down there on a confirmation trip. Likely contract pneumonia en route."
