I can tell by your characterization of this gentleman that you were thinking of befriending him and helping him upgrade his wardrobe. Just think of your kilt as a shortcut to assessing his true character . . . you were able to quickly determine that your original plan would have been unpleasant for you both.

Note to self, DO NOT PLAY DARTS WITH ABAX UNTIL HE IS GOOD AND DRUNK...
They used to tell us in sales 10% of people you encounter will fall in love with you and buy from you because they like you. 10% will not like you no matter what. You make your living in that undecided 80%.
Maybe kilting in amongst the unwashed is like that.
In the short time I have been wearing kilts, if I feel unmanly enough to go bifurcated for a day, people are starting to ask me where the kilt is. Those days are getting further apart.
The 80% is starting to come around. Today one of our tech supervisors reported seeing a man walking his dog at sunrise in a kilt. It wasn't the braveheart dude in Seaford. So now there are three of us in Southern Delaware.
Who knows Andy, maybe in another five years....

Well Andy,
You know that of all the UK's out there the Mocker model is the most "skirt looking" and least "kilt looking." That may have had some effect.
I have three mockers, but usually wear them with a business shirt for a preppy look (that's a hoot on this olde bird!). Guessing I don't wear them as much because they have more of a skirty look to me.
Think I was in Deleware once about 1970...does part of the Interstate sorta nick the NW corner of the state near Philadelphia?
And, sometimes the appropriate response to those negative messages is a common two word response....
When they get big eyed and startled and stammer something like "Why did you say that?" You can just tell them they insulted you with their comment and you responded with an appropriate suggestion.
Works best with folks you're pretty sure won't wanna fight about it....

The worst was one fat redneck bugger in overalls that stared at me across a restaurant dining room for ten minutes, with an expression of utter confusion: and of course, the confusion soon turned to contempt, because ignorant people don't like to come face to face with things they have never seen before, and thus have their limitations confirmed. This bastard was joined in much of the glaring by his wife, who seemed to regard me as some kind of crossdresser, even though I had a rabbit-fur sporran and a thick leather belt around my waist and a knife sticking out of my sock. I even heard her say something to the effect of "I ain't sure if that's a mayne ur a wuman" as I passed. I was tempted to flip up my kilt to make it clear for her, but better judgement prevailed. Some people.
Sorry to vent, but it was very unpleasant, and so I'm taking this opportunity to expunge it from my memory...
Ahh, that's better...

What part of Alabama do you live in? I live up around Huntsville. I've worn the kilt out and gotten a few stares and some compliments. And the loud drunk redneck at a bar wanting to know where we were playing. I assumed he thought I was in a pipe band and just told him we were off that night.
Of course you have to remember, not only are you wearing a kilt, but you are also a foreigner and quite possible a "D@mn Yankee" so you will be looked upon with great suspicion.

Ron, you're right about the Mocker. Perhaps I would have had a different response in another UK. Thinking about it, I have never had that kind of negative reaction to tartan. Maybe "kilt" and "tartan" are more readily recognized.
Still, I really like the Mocker. I like the pockets.
Two word response? "Thank you." "Love you." Pick a fight? Me? Never!

Hey, I've got a "Built for the Kilt" shirt as well!
It lets everyone know immediately that it's not a skirt, and then women are looking trying to figure out exactly what is built for the kilt

occasionally, usually, educating others requires strength, self-assurance and a thick skin. Ignorance requires education, out and out stupidity ... a wide berth

The "Kilt and Tartan" are ALSO recognized. Modern Kilts are recognized here in Delaware, they call you a man in a skirt by and large. In plaid and tartan they ask you where your bagpipes are, RU Scottish? , etc..
Good News!!! the madness is spreading though. My neighbor has asked for his own PDK (home made perldog Kilt). The man drives for a state contractor as sort of a medical limousine. Being 68 years young, my neighbor immediately recognized the comfort quotient of a kilt. check DIY about 2 weeks hence....
The driver also reports seeing modern kilts worn up in Wilmington.... there is hope Andy, give me a few more years
