I competed in men's individual and team sabre at the World Junior Championships in the late 80's. I can't recall having ever seen a serious fencer holding a weapon with a finger extended along the ricasso. Normally, I've seen that finger wrapped around the quillions.
But, as has been pointed out, the pictures were supposed to showcase the costumes, and those are brilliant! Where do you get your boffer weapons from? Have you seen RSW?

Corwin is incorporating the Wushu Flying Swallow style, a technique learned in the mountains of China where he also learned to release the blade catcher before combat.
I competed a couple of times in the States. Most memorable was an event held at a monastery and the Abbot had to come down to the customs to clear us into the states. The border folks were really wary of all our weapons. They, of course, were armed with guns but I guess they though Canada would invade by sword (with rubber tips, mind: sure helped my respect of the US, you guys are helping restore it.)
