Welcome To The Highland Lifestyle Young Man
First off the notion tht you must be of celtic origins to wear a kilt is so very wrong. I am of the opinion that with my old former unit ( TOR SCOT R) in the late 1960's to early 1980's we had a most diverse, unit.
I know of no other ethnic group who take's into account the vast pleasure's of being celtic in heart and soul, before their body has any sense of celtic culture.
I am so proud to associate witha great clan of celtic, men with a celtic or highland sense of honour , tradition and pride, at showing off their great heritage.
Carry ON
IF your on the Vancouver ILsand and I spot you, with a kilt, on your going to need to find a pub real fast.
Warning tends to drink when near fellow Scots.

Well, Mike, I can see that you don't mess around when you get into something.
If you start getting into heavy wool tanks, you're lost. But then, getting into heavy wool tanks is probably a very good idea in Vacouver about November or there abouts.
Welcome aboard. I've heard rumors that the kilt fever passes with time, but I haven't yet found anyone for whom it was true.

Thank you very much to everyone for the warm welcome. And to the moderator that approved this thread, I apologize for attempting to post it some 4(?) times or more. I was having problems with my net connection last night, and thought it kept failing. Then, the last time I tried to post it, I got the message that the thread would be first approved by a moderator. Woops!
I have to say, that I've been wearing a kilt pretty much each evening, to many different activities, the movies, a CFL game, shopping, to restaurants, even to my weekend employer (a hockey shop) and have had pretty much universal positive reaction to them. The most negative comment that I've heard so far was , "What the heck are you wearing?!" but was later followed up that evening from the same person with, "I gotta get me one of those kilts."
Lee, I am very much looking forward to the Freedom Kilt. I went with a cargo model with all the options, in the maroon fabric. Steve had a few suggestions, and I'm anxiously awaiting the results. If it looks half as good as I picture it in my head, it'll be amazing.
Raphael, How often are the Kilts nights? And where are they held? Maybe by that time I'll have the kilts screened as well.
Big Mikey, Where in Langley are you? Although I live in Vancouver, I grew up in Aldergrove (where my parents still live) and I actually work in Langley.
Kid Cossack, I'd actually love to find out if anyone out there makes a modern/contemporary version of a hakama nowadays. I think that would look pretty good as well.
TORSCOT7007, I haven't been back over to the island in a few years, but would like to get back over there some day. Especially nice would now be a chance to stop by Steve's shop and have a look around.
thescot, The weather here in Vancouver is actually pretty moderate. We never really get too cold, nor do we ever get too hot. I think the workmans UK's in the duck cloth will work really well, as duck cloth seems to be a bit more water repellant, and we do get more than our fair share of rain. I don't know if I'll ever get into the tanks. In my mind, they seem like they would be a bit more uncomfortable (itchy, heavy, hot) than the modern mugs.
Casper, Can you give me some more info on your avatar? I'm wondering what all makes up the different pieces of it.
Thanks again everyone!
Mike

My avatar is the Northern Ireland flag. Its been banned since the 70's, though, as its considered a sign of the protestant loyalist community (my great grandfather came here from Armagh)
- 6 pointed star represents the 6 counties in the country
- Crown represents the monarchy
- The background is St. George's Cross (English flag)
- Red Hand of Ulster (since Northern Ireland occupies most of the Province of Ulster on the island).

Thanks, Casper! That's really interesting. I was particularly drawn to the 6 pointed star, as my wife is jewish.

I've never read of the flag being "banned" per se, just that it does not have any official status of the flag of Northern Ireland.
BTW, there is another flag, which is sometimes referred to as the "Ulster-Scots" flag; a red saltire, combining the Crosses of St. Patrick & Andrew, with the six-pointed star and Red Hand of Ulster.
The St. Patrick's Cross is also making a comback in NI as well.
Regards,
Todd
