No offence meant, sir -- Since you are a Marine, I know you appreciate unit esprit-de-corps and history. Of all the branches of service I worked with in Park Service (Battlefield staff rides), the Marines were second to none in knowing their history, traditions and customs.

But please do not discount Bob Martin's work because you may disagree with it. It is a wonderful reference book for the kilted gentleman. It's worth checking out.

BTW, check out Ben Silver, a purveyor of gentleman's neckwear in South Carolina -- I believe they sell as USMC regimental (striped) tie.

    Regards,

    Todd

Ab-so-malutely No Offence taken, as none was meant.

And the bit about Bob Martin was meant as a joke.... Almost his entire book, is right on! I have his book, and the one by J. Charles Thompson too.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but aren't "Regimental" ties formally adopted by English Regiments, and the ones that we wear on this side of the pond, just sad copies?

    Ah...very good then!

There are "regimental ties" and "regimental ties"...Ben Silver does offer a limited number of American service ties, ties in decoration colours (the Silver Star, etc.) and unit ties -- I seem to remember one in the colours of the 5th Special Forces flash. I suppose it depends on whether or not the unit association had "officially" adopted it.

I have found that the types of ties sold in policemen catalogs make good kilt ties.

I have one Galbraith tartan tie that I wear when either I am not wearing a kilt (which isn't all that often anymore) or wearing a solid color kilt.

Most of the time I either wear this plain red tie:

Or this navy blue one. I rather like this one as it has tiny red rampant lions on it.

    :

I purchased it from my friend Jon's online store

    http://www.highlandwarmth.com/HW/clo...CrestTies.html

I found a similar one in a second hand store for $1 brand new. It is also blue but with tiny yellow rampant lions and it has stripes made up of very small red script that reads "Illegitimi non carborundum". I have yet to find an occasion that it would seem appropriate to wear it to.

I find that it looks best to tie my tie so that the wide front part is just above the belt buckle. Then I fold the now too long thin back part of tie in on itself. I hold the whole thing in place with a tie clip.

    Cheers

    Jamie
