Autumn has been making me homesick. The leaves here don't change into the vibrant colors like they do in Wisconsin, and the cider, although good, is clear and sweet, a far cry from the cloudy, bitter cider from the orchards of my home.
I also go out of my way to step on a crunchy-looking leaf.
Oh, and Wisconsin Badger games too. It's not just watching the Badgers, it's the whole ceremony I miss. Waking up on a Saturday at 10:00, finding a spot in Camp Randall's parking lot to start tailgating. Just relaxing with a few beer brats and deep fried Wisconsin cheddar cheese curds (WHOA could I go for a few of those night now!), enjoying the cool weather with friends, and then during the game cheering on the band, singing "On, Wisconsin!" with my dad. Afterwards, going home and warming up with a fire and some homemade pumpkin soup and rye bread.
Ok, I gotta stop now...

I too love autumn, although I don't recall appreciating it until I came to Canada. the crunching of the leaves, the frost, the first snow. As I grow older though I'm appreciating spring more and more.

I'm not much for Halloween anymore, since all of my kids are grown and no grandkids are yet on the horizon. We live in the country, and our house isn't even visible until you pull into the yard, so we don't get trick or treaters either. But, I love the cooler temperatures of Autumn. I haven't had any heat or cooling on since the end pf September. The leaves are just starting to turn, and the smell of wood smoke occasionally drifts over from my nearest neighbor (nearly a quarter mile away) Weekends feature Saturday mornings sitting in my tree stand, with my crossbow, and afternoon college football, especially Va Tech. It's great see that the students have put the tragedy from earlier this year behind them.

I love Autumn.... Best things ever are the crisp, chilly air, the scent of leaves burning, the warm apple cider, fresh pumpkin pie, sitting on the porch in the morning with a hot cup of coffee... Oh and getting as much candy as possible on Halloween.

I suppose someday I may get Halloween back. Until then, I'll just have to survive with what I've got.
There is hope. When you have children of your own you will be able to relive your childhood vicariously through them.

You just reminded me about a trebuchet I made a long while back for the explicit purpose of throwing pumpkins for skeet shooting. My friends and I must have spent over a thousand dollars on pumpkins that year but damn was that fun!

I on thing I miss the most is the homemade popcorn balls that always awaited us at my Grandmother's farmhouse... chewy, sweet, delicious My grandmother is 84 now, and I should ask her to make the popcorn balls for my niece and nephew!

So what's stopping you from learning from Grandmother how to make popcorn balls???? My grandmother died when my brothers were little ( I am 16 years older than them ) I carry on some of the things my grandmother did...[especially tomatoe soup cake--i just made some for my cousins, last week,,, and you could see the tears in their eyes.. and their kids reply was yuck...]
I have not had popcorn balls in years....hmmm i have my neighbors recipe somewhere.
Unfortunately, since i live in a drug/crime infested neighborhood... we don't get trick or treaters. I still buy candy... the good stuff,,, so i can eat it.
I guess, since I purchased some very BMovie dvds (99C) that have some really bad monster movies on them.. I will sit in the dark and watch them!

Hello all,
Halloween signals a change in mood for our town. It's the last great gasp of early Autumn before the slow slide of winter begins. It's our late season Mardi Gras.
