Correct; traditionally the French do wear their berets pulled over the left ear. In the Commonwealth, the cap badge, as you well know, is over the left eye, with a few exceptions mentioned here.

Hackles are generally removed in combat; however, the right of a regiment to wear a particular colour of hackle is generally given for bravery under fire, so the hackle becomes a symbol of the regiment's history and tradition. I remember seeing a t-shirt from the Royal Regiment of Fusilier's kit-shop one time with the distinct message:
"Don't tackle with the hackle!"
In terms of ties with overalls, you obviously have never been to the Ozarks. My good friend who is a true Ozarks "hillbilly" (and also wears a kilt, Kerr tartan) says that every hillman has his "good pair" of overalls to wear to church with shirt and tie.

Not just the Ozarks, either; many of the older farmers around here wear (it's almost a uniform) overalls, shirt, tie and corduroy jacket to church. My grandfather did for as long as I knew him. It's not a look I plan to adopt anytime soon, but it is quite common, and not bad looking, once you get used to it.

Being only two generations removed from the Ozarks myself, I can attest to the tie and overalls attire. And it's true it's not restricted to us hillbillies; I've seen the same around these parts.
But I don't know of anyone but the Foreign Legion who wear the beret pulled to the left. And, being the rather tough outfit that it is, I'm sure it's just fine!
Also, some berets actually have air holes on one side which require them to be worn a certain way. I bought one from the Yugoslvian military with the little vents on the right you so would need to pull it that way.
Either way, Panache, that's a very good looking outfit, rig, and dog. So who cares how you wear your beret?
