Hi hi hi hi from Michigan

I just noticed this forum! My name is Matt, and I'm a third-year student at the University of Michigan. I've had a kilt since I graduated from High School. I wore it at graduation, and I am proud to say, looking back, that the only complaints anyone could have about the way I wore it were (a) no flashes and (b) the kilt is too big.

It's a cheap kilt imitation, which I did not know until I read Matt Newsome's article and recognized the label on the inside.

Fortunately, I've been jonesing for a Newsome for some time now, and only have about 6 weeks left until I can switch kilts. My current one is too big (as I am a very small guy), so I'm really looking forward to a tailored kilt.

Otherwise, I play the violin (acoustic and electric, classical and jazz) and am starting a band with a couple friends (as of last night), so we'll see what happens there. I like things that are hilarious, and I like a well-dressed person, kilted or no.

I have a vast collection of panted suits (well, 5 suits, a couple overcoats, 4.5 billion ties, and a lot of shirts) that are completely thrift-store-bought. So, this is the first time I have ever actually spent more than $15 on any single article of clothing for myself. Therefore this is a pretty exciting and scary endeavor for me. It's like, I see a $375 jacket, and it looks like the jacket I paid $8 for.

I'd modify my current stuff, but I've not the time or skill (yet). This summer, I plan on making my first kilt (probably a denim kilt/utility belt hybrid) just to see what happens. That way if anybody says anything to me about my kilt not being tartan, I can say "hey man, I made this so you can go [obscenity]."

I spent four months in a Zen Buddhist monastery, and am currently a math concentrator, hoping to add Organizational Studies to the list (it's like business, but generalized and more fun).

Haha that's real long, 10 points to anyone who reads it!

    Your pal,
    Matt!

    EDIT:
PS. Some of my friends and I are trying to design a University of Michigan tartan, and then pool our resources to get some nice fabric. Also we plan on trying to get the university president to approve it and make it official. Our main weapon in convincing her is that two of our biggest rival schools (MSU and Notre Dame) have tartans, so why don't we? Anyway, if anybody knows anything about the process of making a tartan, I'd love to hear from you! And please, we are poor college students, and aren't all that interested in paying a bunch of money (more than we have to, anyway).
