Thanks, I'll do that.
What downside could there be to wearing a tartan that has personal meaning to you? Doesn't mean you have to restrict yourself to one tartan but it sounds like a good first kilt choice.
Looking back at that post, I don't think I made myself clear. I was looking at downsides for NOT buying my first kilt in my clan tartan. I'm concerned if I choose another tartan now, only to save money, I'll not be as happy with the kilt. I would like to get some kilts in different tartans. I would also like to wait and get a Fraser Red when I can afford a traditional wool kilt.

Disclaimer: I just got my first kilt (sportkilt commando in digital camo) I haven't even worn it out yet (Saturday)
Maybe you should go with a different tartan, maybe a universal one. If you are wanting more kilts in the future you are probably going to want your family tartan in your "best" kilt. Then you would have 2 kilts in the same tartan.
Also I think a tartan kilt needs a sporran, not necessarily the hose/flashes

I would go for the Fraser (hunting) in the USA Casual and order the assecories (belt, sporran, hose) from Stillwater. If you are only going to have one kilt for the time being, be sure that is it adaptable to the situations you want to use it for.
PV is a great material and it holds the pleats a bit better than acrylic.

Interesting, everyone has jumped to tartans. If you're just going for casual wear, have you considered any not traditional kilts (Utilikilt, RKilt, Union kilts, etc.) While I love my tartans (and end up wearing then 1-2 times a week), I live in non traditionals. For $250 you could still get an original UK, and a Stillwater standard + the night stalker sporran, and be set for what ever life throws at you.

For not much more, Freedom Kilts can give you a super non-tartan unit...with pockets too.

Thanks for everyone's advise. I think I'm going to wait and get a USAK Semi-traditional in the Fraser Hunting.

That sounds like a great idea Kent, the USA Kilts Semi-Trad. is a very nice kilt for the money, you will not be disappointed, at least that way you will have a kilt in your family tartan that you can wear casually and dress it up nicely as well.

As others have said, I'd also recommend a USAK semi-trad.
A good looking, well built hand made kilt in PVC for a lot less than you would pay for a wool kilt.
