Feeding back
The hair rocks, so does the kilt. There's a black gent with a local celtic group that wears a kilt and he wears it well.
As for the comments, I've even taken my little sister to task for calling it a skirt. She even married a Fitzpatrick for Pete's sake. Fortunately her young daughters know better and think it's cool their uncle wears kilts.
I think the original post took the giggling little girls and their father a bit too personally.

In New York city, on St. Andrews Day <11/30/07> I attended a Kilt night at the Scottish pub "St. Andrews" 44 Street on the west side of Manhattan. I walked out down to 42 street heading West. The "cat" ("nice skirt") calls from mostly Black/Latino adults, you would think they never say a Black (1/4 Scots man) in a kilt before! I guess it really shows how mean people can be. I thought I wanted to hide. I am still some what new to Kilt wearing (going on 2 years) SO i guess I my skin has a bit more to go before I get the thick Scotsman edge, my Great Grandfather was known for. I turned to one group of Black "Hoolagans" when they shouted " nice skirt", I replied "It's a Kilt!"
then, a white couple walked up to me and wished me a " Happy St. Andrews Day!" They Chatted me up a bit asked about my tartan, I was wearing my new <kilt #2> Geoffrey Tailor kilt district tartan "Hollyrood".
It think it made me more defiant! :butt: I am def planning on attending this sat afternoon's kilt night in NYC !! and I am already thinking about kilt number 3 ! :buttkick:
I am curious what you Kilted men think when you see non white men in Caledonian gear? I wish Samuel Jackson would make a sequel to his movie "Formula 51" he wears a kilt in the entire second half of the movie!

Yeah, haven't seen SLJ in the kilt for a while, though I know he does wear them from time to time.
I don't see many guys in kilts around here, but when I see pictures of non-white guys in kilts, I rarely even notice.
I can understand why the same people who assume I must be Scottish (or Irish) and that there must be some sort of holiday or event going on when they see me in a kilt, might also be a bit confused when they see a black guy in a kilt. I'm sure they have no idea that there are Scotsmen who aren't pasty white. And we all know they don't understand that there are other reasons to wear a kilt. It's an unfortunate side effect of the kilt's status as national symbol. Black guy in a kilt, white guy in a dashiki, latino in a kimono, it all goes against the typical expectations. Some people simply won't be able to wrap their heads around it.
Hell, most people have trouble understanding that I'm black by adoption. To them I look white, so I'm white, regardless of the native american heritage and black family. Apparently I didn't look jewish enough to stay home on yom kippur as a kid either. It's all about those snap judgements.
And yet, if I give people a phony Japanese name and manage to keep a straight face, most of the time they'll believe it. Proof once again, that people are idiots.
As for the original post, Girls giggle all the time. I expect that from kids. I still get that from college girls from time to time. And guys. I was walking around a corner when heard some guy behind me on a cell phone say "Dude, I just saw a guy in a skirt." I would have corrected him but I was drinking at the time and I wasn't going to wait around until I was finished.
Personally, I like the dad's response. It's funny. He certainly should have corrected them for being so disrespectful, but if he were doing that regularly, it probably wouldn't have happened. It really shouldn't be a surprise when bad parents have bad kids.
But you can't let them get to you. I mean really, kids are idiots. And adults are idiots. And old people too. And the animals. Especially squirrels. I hate them little bastards.
Bah! I need a drink...

My niece is in her early teens and every time she'd see me in a kilt she would run up with a huge grin and say "Nice skirt!" Then she'd giggle and add "I just had to say that." One day she had her little boyfriend with her and started in on my "skirt". I just laughed and said "It's only a skirt if you wear something under it." This was the look on her face.
I haven't heard any "skirt" comments since then.

The same thing I think when I see white guys in a kilt.
COOL!
Very likely followed by "Now what tartan is that? "

They are evil aren't they.
I have to admit I took an unholy joy in being the only one who could get away with telling my brothers and uncles (blood and adopted) "nice dress" at my sister's wedding. Of course I was 13 and everybody knows 13 year old girls are almost as evil as squirrels. My mom does always complain that people ask who made the bride's dress but nobody asks who made the groom's dress. Of course my BIL can't object to my mom making comments, she'd kick his butt. Again.
I get away with it on cuteness alone... and the fact that that other than the good natured teasing they know that I'm cool with the kilts and will happily encourage the habit. I get away with a lot on cuteness though, gotta milk that one while it lasts.

I thought most 13 year old girls were squirrels ...
Evil as they are (both), at least they're not stupid like deer and pigeons.
The first will run out in front of your car trying to get hit, the other will stand there in front of your car waiting to get hit. Dumber than a box of rocks and nowhere near as useful.
