from Chicago.
Celtic heritage is not necessary, but it's good to know the background of any tartan you are wearing and some history on kilts in general (Matt Newsome has some great info at www.albanach.org)

Nigel,
First off From a sunny but chilly St. Louis, Mo. It is nice to see some one like you taking an interest in kilts, But as a father let me just say don't push him to hard let him know that there are a lot of dads here on the forum who feel the same way as you do. I can say that as a dad if my son had come to me before I started wear a kilt and asked if he could get one and wear it I would not have thought twice about it and told him to go for it.
Be patient and all good things will come to you.
Good luck.

It is possible people's reactions might be worrying him, in which case I'll show him this thread and others.
I think we just need to show that the kilt is not "unusual". I mean, sure it's still not pants, but the kilt can be dressed up nicely. Perhaps you can assemble pictures from this forum to show him that. Photos of British Royalty past and present appear in various threads on this forum; perhaps they can show how nice and normal a kilt can look. I think that photos of various well-known people/businessmen/whomever wearing the kilt properly (no Branson pics here ) and in a more "conformist" manner might help you make your case.
Unfortunately on a small budget it would be hard to add formal accessories. Those might help you convince your dad, though I'm not sure if you'd be too keen on wearing them.

WELCOME from Flint, Michigan! You sound like you are certainly going about everything in the right way...very respectfully!! Good start!
Now, your name, Nigel, suggests that you may have some British connection somehow, yes? Maybe this angle could help a bit? Good luck...and, by the way, I'm sure you'll love anything you may get from Stillwater Kilts!!

No British connection - my mother's just really weird, as evinced by my siblings' names. Amber Jessica Desiree Grasser, Noelani Niko Fisher, Nigel Kahlil Fisher (myself), Torin Sirus Mowery, Finnian Jett Lewis. I think I will assemble pictures to show him - thanks for the tip.
Mowgli: I live around 69th in Thurston and attend SHS. I only attend it because of the marching/band program - we have uniforms here!
Again, my gratitude for the advice, and I will be doing that.

Here's a jumpstart for the picture collection: The Duke of Windsor in a kilt. Ok, so he might be a bit old, but he had impeccable fashion sense.
Prince CHrales. It's not his best kilted picture, but it's a start.

Oh, that's cool. I'm sure you've been asked this a lot, but have you ever been to Graceland?
TKW - thanks for the pictures. I showed them to my dad and he said it can look okay on some people. He might be warming up to the idea!

Wanting a Kilt
A good start is always around celtic events such as highland games, Burns nights, celtic activities etc. Many of the contestants and participants are of different ethnic backgrounds but enjoy the events and competition. A basic kilt is a good way to feel part of the atmosphere. Take your father along if he will go.
