Not being Scottish, I can't comment on your final inquiries, but I just wanted to say welcome (!) and good luck on new years eve!

John, a warm welcome to X Marks from West Sussex. Believe me, as one who is 75% English and 25% Scottish, you simply cannot offend anyone from North of the border by wearing the kilt, as long as you do so respectfully. Wear it formally, semi-formally or casually - but present yourself cleanly, neatly and tidily. Colour co-ordinate your accesories and other items of clothing (shirt, hose, etc.) and you will be just fine. I pop up to Scotland at least once a year and, in fact, will be driving to Dumfries and Edinburgh for ten days in three weeks time and will be kilted throughout - a case of having to be, as I've been a full-time kilt wearer for 8½ years now (yes, down here in Sussex!) and own no trousers or shorts at all.
By the way, where is your "South of the Border"? We like to have some idea of everyone's location since it helps greatly with answering queries, etc, and many of us like to meet up whenever possible. We are also hungry for photos of each other when kilted - so get snapping!!
Take care,
Ham.

First from Boston, Massachusetts.
Second: Wear the kilt proudly! I have toured Ireland and Scotland kilted. Being neat and displaying the kilt properly earned much respect in the many pubs I visited. In Scotland the landlord of more than one of the Bed & Breakfasts that we stayed at poured the first dram on the house to every gentleman that came in kilted! Even with my self coloured Amerikilt.
--- Kilt on.
And again welcome to the rabble

Welcome aboard,
Doubt you'll have any trouble...it is 2007...nearly 2008.
I'm American of Scot, Welsh, Irish, English ancestry and wear the Royal Air Force tartan in honor of my late father's service as a Flying Sergeant in the RAF back in 1942. Do you think any English will mind?
Nope, me neither. Stand tall, smile, and look 'em in the eye and you'll be fine sir.

Kilts South of the Border
Hi John. Welcome to this very friendly forum. I was born in NE England to a Scots family and have always lived here. I have worn my kilt around Cleveland every evening and every weekend for the past 3 years, and less frequently for 8 years before taht and not had any "bother" at all. The only bother I do get is from groping females !
As Hamish says, wear your kilt with confidence, and smartly, and everybody will like you.
