Does it matter whether the lead actor is a Scot or not? The last time I check, Butler isn't from Sparta and yet he plays a Spartan Leader!!! The blind obsession of needing a Scottish actor to play the part of a fictional character is sickening.

    Raphael~
It is because Lambert in the original is Belgian. Just like to have an authentic accent. Hated Tom Cruise in "Far And Away", though Nicole Kidman did well enough.
Further, I like Butler as an actor. I do not know any of Thomas Jane's work.
Connery as an Egyptian Spanaird with a Scots accent was just silly.
I'd also like to point out that I'm not a Scot, but of Dutch & German heritage.

With all the various British accents in "300" I began to wonder if Sparta was located somewhere near Yorkshire.

Naw, you need somene with a bit more of tan - Villalobos Ramirez was originally an Egyptian ("died" while making a pyramid, if I remember right).

And before someone follows up the "tan" remark -
George Hamilton as Zorro the Gay Blade - yes.
George Hamilton as the gay Spanish peacock - no.
