I focus on the colors of the kilt-- my hose complement it, and my shirt, too (at least that's my intent).

That is a very good rule to follow. This should be Kilt Hose Rule No. 1.

In my University days we had the rule: Throw it at the wall. . . . if it doesn't stick, wear it.

Um, if they're both clean, then they're matching right? Or is there more to this whole fashion thing???

As for hose, I only have cream at the moment, but I'm waiting on some black and bottle green ones from the Scottish Tartans Museum. I think they'll both look grand with my green-heavy kilt (MacNeil of Barra)

As with Ted Crocker, my only hose at the moment are the cream-colored pair I bought when I put together my PC outfit for my wedding. I'll wear these w. black flashes when the event is black-tie. With a Mackenzie modern kilt and a black muskrat sporran, the overall look is a bit dark but hopefully somewhat sophisticated.

Now that I also own a navy Argyll (technically Braemar?) jacket, I really need to get a pair navy hose to go with. (As many have said, matching a dominant color of the tartan and also the color of the aforementioned jacket.) Somewhere along the way I managed to acquire a pair of red flashes (which I currently wear with the cream hose and said Argyll) matching the red stripes in the tartan and keeping the informal look a bit peppier.

I like to wear matching argyll hose for semi-formal wear. For the MacIntyre Hunting Modern kilt that I don for casual, I like to wear red hose or my red-and-white diced castellated hose. For my other kilts for casual wear, I usually like to pick out a tartan stripe and match the hose to that to bring out that color.

Well... Someday I'll have brown Lewis hose. That would be for a daywear outfit I have been putting together: brown corduroy jacket/waistcoat and Weathered 1/2 Lamont.

I do have thick gray, knee high socks with a cable pattern and a red band at the top. They're alright for casual in my Nightstalker I guess.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

May I ask where you purchased said diced hose?

I only wear cream colored hose when I march in parades.

All of my pairs of hose match my tartan (Davidson) and I wear black hose with my Prince Charlie coat with tails and vest during Hogmanay.

I also only wear traditional flashes (garters). The flashes that most wear look cheap - and they are cheap.

    Against the Grain...

Well, it would seem that my hose wearing protocol is a bit opposite most folks here.

I've always felt that cream hose are a safe bet with any tartan or outfit, and whether day or evening wear, especially if it's more formal. I feel they especially compliment my MacGregor tartan with its white stripes (qv). This may simply be from the literature I first read on the wearing of the kilt, or just how my sensibilities developed (I've been wearing the kilt near on twelve or more years now).

That being said, I do find coloured hose to be a lot of fun to wear, and always prefer coloured hose if wearing a white shirt. My personal protocol for choosing hose is either to highlight the secondary colour in my tartan (green for MacGregor), or wear a neutral coloured hose, ie oatmeal, cream, kahki etc. My favourite flashes to wear are those made of the tartan of my kilt, or if solid then of a colour to match, again, the secondary colour in my tartan.

    A few photos to illustrate:
