If you buy thing separately, you get to pick out exactly what you want and don't occur a huge one-time cost.

georgeblack7 - agree entirely.
especially dont let a package deal dictate to you which tartans etc you can have as this is usually based on what cheap deals the shop can get and the choice is limited. the best way is to hand pick everything exactly as you wan it so you feel it is your own kilt outfit because you wont be buying this very often...

Definitely! And whatever you do, don't settle for anything second or third rate for this kilt. It will last you a lifetime if well made and of good materials. Jackets are relatively cheap, bonnets, hose, and the like ditto, the Kilt is the big thing and the foundation for all that follows.

And don't forget about the option of having your kilt hand-crafted by one of the talented kiltmakers you will find here (including Dr. Barb). Or possibly even making it yourself.

Here is a thought, just to liven things up, and make the choice the harder. Do not buy the ploid fly, buy a Great Kilt, in the 30 inch wide, by 4 odd yd long.You can then wear it as a Great Kilt or fold the 4 odd yd in half and wear it as a Wee Kilt. There are no 'rules' to how to wear a kilt, there are a few 'expected 'features, rear pleats, cross aprons,ect, but the rest is up to you. This will give you, in effect, two kilts, but get the lighter weight fabrick, or you will be very warm in Canada in Jan. when you double the fabrick!

I do hope you get to meet with Barb - she will surely give you the best, and first-hand, advice. I am looking forward to welcoming her here next year.

You have selected Scotweb for your outfit, and I would go along with that choice, it's a good one, but you might also take a look at Geoffrey (Tailor) in Edinburgh whilst you are there. One important point: Scotweb is an Internet and Mail Order company and I do not think it is possible for customers to visit their premises to be measured - best to ask them about that.

What others say about selecting items separately from different sources is certainly valid. That is what I have always done but, if your time is limited and suppliers somewhat scattered, there is something to be said for doing it all with one hit!
