Thanks for all the information, guys. I made the rookie mistake of ordering the kilt without the sewn down pleats before I signed up on this forum, and I can't sew worth a crud, so perhaps I could get my mom to help me out with it.
But it sounds like USA Kilts is going to be the destination for my next casual, if only to compare the two and find out which will suit me better in the long run.
Also, I'm afraid the Loch Ness Driver isn't in my repertoire, but the seated reverse hammerlock I call the "Ness Lock" certainly could use a pleat sweep during its execution. :-P

Howdy!
Yet another suggestion: I just came back from a 25-day camping trip where I took my Stewart Hunting Modern Freedom Kilt. It really took a beating out in the woods. When I came back to civilization I realized I had no clean clothes and was going to go out to dinner. I put my Freedom Kilt on and with a wet rag just scrubbed in a downward motion along the apron and pleats and it looked superb, as if I had taken it to the cleaners.
I highly recommend Freedom Kilts, Steve and his crew really do a great job, good looking and practical, not to mention being able to take all the roughness of camping in the mountains. To top it off, Freedom Kilts have pockets.
Cheers,

re
I feel like with my financial situation right now my only choice is a non-wool at this point. Many of us don't have $350-600 to drop. Seems like best selection is usakilts but my brother has a sportkilt that looks pretty good too.

If you have a choice between a Sport Kilt and a USA Kilt, go for the USA. They're only slightly more expensive, but infinitely higher quality. As Ron said... 3 SK's and 22 USAK's.

I'm just a simple guy originally from the farm land north of Kokomo, but I'm a USAK fan. I spent quite a bit of my combat pay/non-taxed money (Thanks Uncle Sam!) in Pheonixville while home on leave. I've putting the pleats through stress tests by sitting on them a lot. All come out just fine, haven't even had to re-press them. I recommend the semi-trads. They are a bit more, but really nice and well worth it.
Oh yeah, there is nothing wrong with admitting that Black and Old Gold is far superior to that tacky Red and White they have down south.

I own neither, but have seen both USAK and SK and have to say that the hands down winner is the USAK.
I do own kilts from both SWK and FC, and love them. They are more cost effective than the USAK (at least the 13 oz. acrylic, which seems like it would be better for sports).
The Economy or Thrifty SWK is a good kilt (about $35), but so is the FC 13 oz. (about $60) FC has a much wider tartan selection, but if you order from them, make sure your size is in stock (in other words, call them).
I, personally, would prefer an SWK or FC to a SK any day. Just my personal preference, though.

After reading Hamish's recent review, AlphaKilt is getting some serious consideration here ;-)

I have been thinking of buying a tartan kilt too.
I read through all of the responses...helpful info, but...
I have a question for the more knowlegeable...
What about Bear Kilts? He is back up and running. Are there any reviews of his kilts?
