I'll pay the little extra for Jerry's incomparable service.

The Stillwater says the sale is final on that Black Watch kilt. Because the Economy kilts are discontinued, it's not a good idea to buy one because you can't return it at all.

Since the economy kilt is discontinued, it isn't returnable at all. Not a good sign.
Only a very few have ordered from both companies (I know CDNSushi has). So it's kind of lopsided if everyone responds like, "Oh I haven't ordered from Kiltmart, but I ordered from Stillwater".

I have ordered from both, and my opinion still stands that you'll be much happier with a SWK. Everyone has different tastes though, so who knows. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed, I'm just trying to give my opinion on my exp with each. I may buy another kilt from Kiltmart again someday, especially because they are local. But that speaks volumes to me as well. I can do to their shop and buy a kilt, or I can order online at SWK.... and I still prefer to order online if given the choice between the two.

Starshine,
For simplicity's sake I have merged your two threads into one.
I myself am a big fan of Stillwater Kilts and currently own 6 of them (three acrylic Standards and three wool Heavyweights).
Cheers

Nothing against Kiltmart, but go with Stillwater.
Better all around...and I'm not paid to say it.

"Only a very few have ordered from both companies..."
True, but maybe there's a reason for that.
They're both on the same internet. There's no reason to think that more people stumble across SWK's website than Kiltmart's for some reason, or that more search engines turn up SWK than Kiltmart. So it must be something else. What that might be, I'm not prepared to say.
Besides, speaking only for myself, I have no reason to order from Company B when Company A gives me great price, great value and great service. Yes, there's a $5 difference in price, but that fivespot is worth it to me to know that the kilt will be in my mailbox 15 minutes before I actually order it and that if I need to do an exchange, that's not a problem.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

Stillwater - Jerry's service is second to none! I don't believe you talked to Jerry, if you got a "rude" answer.... it must have been that kid from down the street.---

I admit the SWK STANDARD (the $80 one) is nice, but I don't like the SWK ECONOMY or SWK THRIFTY. I have seen all three, and the SWK Standard is the only one I liked.
Comparing the KM Economy and the SWK Affordable (which I have seen both in person), even though they are probably both made of Acrylic, the KM Economy looks closer to woven wool.
This isn't really a battle of the companies, it's mostly which cheap kilt would be a better value. I personally wouldn't buy a gift that wasn't returnable, even if it was from a reputable company.
You guys probably get better service because he knows you from this forum. But for someone he doesn't know, he didn't come across friendly or even helpful. And that's probably a big reason why I would not recommend SWK.

I asked where the kilts were made and his response was very generic, something about overseas contractors. So he didn't really answer my question. I guessed that they were made overseas, but where exactly?

kakkui,
There is a big difference between "rude" and "vague".
It might just be possible that there are companies out there that might just try to contact a kilt importer's manufacturers to set up/ add to their own kilt business.
An importer might get a bit wary after a while and some nasty experiences.
I would be very interested to see the exact question asked and the exact answer given.
I doubt very much if Jerry gives any better service to the members of X Marks the Scot. He isn't on the forum all that much and when he does he seldom participates in discussions about Stillwater Kilts.
Jerry and Stillwater Kilts have certainly (and rightfully) earned a good repuatation here on XMTS. He has proven himself time and again to be a quick responding, honest, and forthright fellow. It is possible you were the exception, or caught him on a bad day, but I stand by my recomendation of Stillwater Kilts.
Cheers
Jamie
