That's really strange Matt. And I bow to your experience in this field. But I have just checked all the hose in my shop, that's 5 manufacturers, and all seem to be designed to be turned twice.
It could also be that I buy hose that way because I like that look, but honestly until this thread I never paid much attention. I assumed that a twice fold over was normal because the first hose I ever bought were designed that way and I have always worn my hose with a double turn-over.

I'm thankful that this came up because it's good to be aware that there are different styles.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Hi All, I can't believe that I have had such good replies, and all different, I usually knit about 3 inches for the tops so I reckon that is the way to go then we shall see how they look.......Started on some shetland wool cable top hose this week.

I wear almost all my hose as Steve described...folded over once, then back up. I've noticed that if I don't fold them that way they are either too long or have a fold over that is too long. I started doing this on my own without knowing if anyone else wore their hose in such a way. In any case, it works well for me by giving my hose the proper height and making the cuff a bit thicker.

Here's an example of how I wear my hose. The tops are turned down and then turned back up (making double thickness). Again, I'm not saying this the norm, but just how I wear them.

My mother has made two sets from a pattern that knits the cuff facing opposite the calf, so to speak, so when you turn it down once the cuff and calf patterns are both facing outward. It's the pattern discussed in a DIY thread here, I can pull it up if anybody's interested and hadn't seen that thread.

Joan, it's fun to see the ways we each do things a little differently. I think that you're on track with a 3-inch cuff, as most of the flashes in my drawer are about 5.5 to 6 inches.

The patterns I've seen, like the popular Toirneach, generally turn the sock inside-out after knitting the cuff. Gainford mentions this in her description, too. My (purchased and knitted) kilt hose are done this way, including the regular Lewis hose with the hose tops attached.

Given that, if I am going to double the cuff; then I'll generally fold half, and then re-fold it downward. This probably goes back to how I wore my Boy Scout stockings, but it also fits the hose I have on hand. Jay and Steve's hose look just fine as they wear them.

Here is a pair with a Gainsford inspired top (reversed & folded once)

And another question, do you ever wear out the heel? Or are they reinforced?

On a lot of the more common, run-of-the-mill kilt hose, the pattern on the cuff is made so that it doesn't really matter which side you are looking at. And as these hose are typically sold by foot size, with no options for the length of the leg, I do tell people if they find the hose too long to do just what you describe and create your own double-cuff by turning the top back up. Folding it this way exposes the patterned top. (As opposed to folding it down twice, which would hide the cuff itself).

If I can see the knob directly below my knee cap and about half to three quarters of my flashes are showing I am good, regardless ofhow much or how little of my tops are turned over. Depends on the hose---some got more, some got less. But like breasts and money I am not sure you can ever have too much top (to turn over).
