The best thing about making them yourself is that you make them to the length YOU require.

What I did was take a section of yarn and wrap it around loosely around my calf and and tied it off (using Matt's directions - http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/garter_howto.html ). Then I measured the amount of the yarn I used and knitted to that length.
