The reactions I've had in the QC have been mostly good, confused, or surprised, nothing close to bad. (I've only ever had one truly negative comment from anyone, interestingly enough from my girlfriend's roommate's boyfriend, though, not the one who likes kilts, she has 2 roommates.)
I've gotten MANY confused/befuddled stares and glances from general public, but on campus it's toned down a bit, though my Swedish professor loves to point out when I wear a kilt to class.
Perhaps the only really weird thing I've had down there has been when I went to a restaurant that is right off campus and I saw an older man bend oddly in his booth and caught him glancing over (and under) to my table which surprised me a lot, but I got a good kick out of that.
It also turns out one of the typical dorm security desk night workers happens to know a piper who she's trying to get me in contact with to try and help me get more progress on my piping.
All in all the kilt is a hit there, and I've seen one other kid at school wearing what looked to be a wool Black Watch with semi-dress sporran and another who wore a kilt during his pipes performance during our homecoming talent show. (He ended up getting flustered and messed up a fair bit, but he's been playing only 2 years, and I give him a LOT of credit for playing and dressing properly for the performance, especially with such a crowd).

There is nothing quite like a kilt, to inspire a total stranger to strike up a conversation.
I don't know of any other item of clothing that has this effect.
Kind regards, David.
