That's terrible, but living on a student's budget isn't so bad...I do it everyday!

I "lost" some money in Budapest back in my student days. The vacation was pretty much spoiled and still after many years the memory is not pleasant.

I understand your situation, although I was not left without anything in my pocket, so it was easier for me.

    I'm really sorry.

    That's a real bummer Alex

I read all the advice about pickpockets in Las Ramblas in Barcelona before my trip in June but kept aware and besides which had my pinlock sporran on. I never went out with all my money or cards on my person just in case.

It's bad that the police made no effort to pursue but at least they helped on the cards. I lost my cards in Paris a couple of years ago and the police wouldn't even check if they had been handed in on the computer. Fortunately I was not on my own though. I still had cash but it was in sterling and took ages to find a bureau de change though.

Hope you get back to Scotland OK and look forward to seeing you at Ferintosh.

    Muy mal. Lo siento

Jeez Louise....sounds like you saw more of the "real" Spain than you'd bargained for.

Ain't it something that a Spanish pickpocket has scoped out cargo kilts. Maybe it does say something for the current kilt boom....

Glad you're resourceful. Whats that old line about the best revenge being not to show the effect of the loss.

So, you think he'll be working the same place in a few days and you can stop back and accost him....or talk to the event promoters about their ticket vendor?

    Alex,
If you need something.. I am sure I can wire you something through Western Union. There would be a conversion, so it wouldn;'t be much, but enough to at least be able to get some food to eat a proper meal. I can't imagine being in a foreign country with little or no money. Let me know.
    Cheers,
    Chad

Same type of thing happened to a friend of mine in Southern France last year and the credit Card Company had him a card the next day he was able to enjoy the rest of his trip. It did take him most of the next day to get it worked out but he was in France for two more weeks.
Still last time I was in Mexico I only carried $50 cash and the credit card on my person the rest was in the safe in the hotel.

Your safe and that's what counts.

    Cessna,

    Few ideas ...

    1) travel insurance -- can you phone them and see if they have a scheme to help get you cash? They must have dealt with this many times.

    2) credit card company -- they might be able to courier a new card to you fast. Many cards have some travel insurance built in.

    3) is there a British embassy nearby? I am not up on latest procedures, but often embassy's will provide emergency help for citizens abroad, including lending money.

If none of the other avenues work, I am sure there are people here that will send money to you. The issue is how. The best I can think of, off the top of my head, is Western Union. With Western Union funds can be sent online using a credit card, provided the sender knows the precise name of the person collecting the funds (as in passport or other ID), the person collecting knows the precise name of the person sending the funds, and the person collecting can prove their identity to the Western Union agent (passport). The receiver just goes into the Western Union agent with these details, and the tracking number, and collects the cash.

Western Union currently quote about £15 fee to send about £100 cash from Canada to Spain (in Euros).

I am not sure where you are precisely? Malaga was it? There seems to be 9 Western Union agents in Malaga. Visit

    http://www.westernunion.com

for more details. There is a link to find local agents.

I would happily send you funds if required.

The British consulate in Malaga :-

    British Consul: Steve Jones
    British Vice Consul: Rosslyn Crotty
    Calle Mauricio Moro Pareto, 2
    Edificio Eurocom
    29006 Malaga
    Tel: (+34) 95 235 2300
    Fax: (+34) 95 235 9211

In theory, they must provide "appropriate help" for you if you are a victim of crime. Not sure how far that will go.

Here are all the consulate offices in Spain :-
