Well you are not wrong Ted, I, for one, like to see the kilt worn in the traditional way. I understand a certain amount of "convention bending" by those that know what's what and I happily put that down to personal flair.

I respect that it is all down to personal choice, but what baffles me, are those that ask how wear this that and the other PROPERLY,they are given an honest reply by many and then they completely ignore the advice and then post a "look at me" picture here and then they wonder(I assume) why they get no replies from the "traditionalists! In the nicest possible way The end result is a joke! That's why there are dress conventions! To guide the unwary and to complement the host,if there is one, and not to make yourself look like a lemon.

    As to Jamie's hat, well-----------------------.

Well... I grow lemons, and I could see how one would not want to look like one... Especially the Volkamer lemons I grow; they're very, very ugly.

Good thread. I totally agree with Jamie. Dress how you want, but at least know where it came from. It's kind of similar to wearing a certain tartan, in that sense.

Now then Ted, you are a very important chap! Where would we gin drinkers be without lemons?

So there is a Scottish connection to Arizona.

Guidelines rather than rules I suspect comes closer to the truth of it for us non-military types. As an artist, I suspect these evolved guidelines boil down to a matter of proportion. Why a wide belt and not a skinny one? Why a hand width gap between the bottom of the belt and the top of the sporran? Why a short waisted jacket and not a longer one? Why hose at four fingers below the knee and a kilt at the top of the knee? I suspect that much like the golden rectangle, these proportions have been judged more visually pleasing than all the attempted alternatives.

Bend the "rules" break the "rules" if you'd like I suppose. Why not - after all that's what fashion is all about.

Now for the matter of rubber chicken sporrans? I believe they are Dadaism pure and simple.

Gin already makes me make the face like I just sucked on a lemon. I don't need to add an actual lemon to the mix. I might implode. You fine sophisticated gents can keep your Gin (more for you anyways).

The thing is... I don't drink.
I do live off grapefruit for about three months each spring, though.

I will be delighted to buy you a drink of your choice, if ever you are this way of the world.
