Give Steve a Break
Let's give Steve a break for all the hard work he puts in for us. If you are taking the fringed material and getting it hemmed by Steve - please don't accept his discount.
He still has to put time and materials into the hemming and IMHO should get something for that.
I've already responded to Steve in this fashion.

Steve,
Please withdraw my comment on having it re-woven. My lovely wife is a seamstress and can handle a blind hem in her sleep (I've seen her do it).
No discount is necessary. Just send it to me rather than to Rocky and we will send it to him after the hemming.
Thanks for all you put into this.

This great forum and its people.
The more I think about this the more I pray that Steve will put a checkbox in his letter to allow us the one true option of accepting the fabric as produced and at the price we have already paid for it. This is what I wish for my fifteen yards. As one who works in a retail establishment, and deals with the surprises of receiving the merchandise. I appreciate the work that Steve has done already.
Should some people need the kilt selvage run made, and Steve needs a few more yards to bring the cost in line, I for one would be grateful for the opportunity to order additional tartan at the FULL price. I am having my kilt made by Steve, and am hoping he can work with the kilt having the fringe. I already have one kilt in the kollection with a fringe along the selvage and a double layer fringe on the front apron. It is the kilt that gets the most attention from the lasses on my subway rides around the city.
I am heartened by the response to this thread and the character of my fellow kilted kind.
Peace and great love for all.

I gotta join the consensus. I'm content to take my 12 yards with the fringe, and I certainly don't need a further discount.
If I ordered a stock tartan in MM's poly-viscose from a domestic supplier, I'd pay maybe $30/yard and probably would not know which selvedge I was getting. If I ordered it from Scotweb, I'd pay at least $15, plus shipping, and might have to fight with FedEx about whether/what duty I owe.
And this is a special weave: it still seems like a bargain to me.

I've just responded to Mr Ashton that I'll accept my order AS IS, without hem, without refund.

Steve,
The comments above sum up the spirit of this forum, however there may be some who are still not satisfied. As a relative Johnny-come-lately, I will look on this as an opportunity and would be more than willing to purchase some material, at the original price, if you have any surplus. PM me if this is the case.

What would the size of this hem be?
I've put hems of all lengths into kilts, and the most important things are as follows:
1) Turn the hem up only once. Turning it up, and then turning the fringed edge over again _will_ make a ridge. Yes, the fringe will show on the inside, but no one should be looking at the inside of your kilt....
2) When you press the kilt, make sure that the iron spans the "bridge" between the double part of the hem and the single part of the rest of the kilt when you're pressing from the front side. If you run the iron on the front side of the kilt "along the ditch" just above the hem, you'll get a ridge. Pressing from the back side, though, you should press with the iron either on the part with the hem or the part without, but not across the two so that you can avoid a ridge.
3) Use a herringbone stitch instead of the standard blind hem stitch. This gives the hem a bit of flex and doesn't pull the outside back in ridge. Here's what it looks like:

Done right, no one will know that your kilt has a hem. If you can put a 1.5" hem in it, great. If you don't have enough length to do that, I wouldn't worry about putting in just 1". Heck, I even lengthened a kilt for a dancer once and had only 1/2" to put into the hem. It was fine.
And Steve, you are the bee's knees.

Steve, you see it's like this... If you have some lengths that do not sell due to others dropping, drop me a PM and I will take some of it off your hands a full price.
