Had one climb into our backyard pool shortly after moving to north Florida 18 years ago and the poor fellah could not find the steps to climb out. Drowned while my wife watched before fishing it out with the pool net. They might be able to jump but they sure can't swim worth a damn. Sink pretty good, though.

Yes, they have been known (observed) to sink to the bottom of a creek, walk across the bottom, and emerge on the other side. They say this is how they crossed the Rio Grande! Makes sense. This is made possible by their ability to deplete their systems of oxygen (their O-H dissociation curve is amazing), sustain that debt for a long time, then quickly replenish when they start breathing again. Cavscout- you can sneak right up on them. They can not see well, can not hear very well, and can not smell very well. Just don't make heavy footcalls, sneaky sneaky does it. However, do not, under any circumstance, let them get their claws on you!
