One would think it would be very uncomfortable. Although, if it was an SWK thrifty, then they could have easily worn it backwards or inside out and might never have known the difference
My guess is that this may have been the first time this backwards gentlemen may have even worn a kilt.

Maybe he was just making sure his pleats were straight, and forgot to turn it back around. I do know one guy that turns it so the pleats are in the front when he drives, says he thinks it’s easier to drive, and the pleats don't get creased, but someone should have told him before the parade.

Perhaps he's starting a new trend of only walking backwards in a kilt!

I attend several Celtic and Renfaire type events every year, and a year never goes by that I don't eventually see some fellow with (among all the other usual 'kilt don'ts') a kilt on backwards or sideways, or with the basting stitches still in, etc. I'm sure they are generally first time wearers, or what I like to call 'annual' kilties that only dare wear it once or twice a year to a games or faire.
Although I know no good deed goes unpunished, I will generally try to help the guy by descretely pointing out the issue to them. I had a guy in a backwards SWK Nightstalker kilt at the Texas Renfest Highland weekend tell me I was misinformed about where the pleats go; That it's obvious that you should sit on "the flat part"! I couldn't question his logic, but pointed out every other kilted person in sight, and he said he'd have to "do some research on that" and stalked off.

That's actually not a bad idea. Just as long as one remembers to turn them the right way when one exits a vehicle....

Yeah, I left the basting stitches in. Wore it to the games, and the proprietor of Celtic Croft was kind enough to point it out. I found an out of the way place and pulled them out. After I thanked him, I would have have bought something from him, as a way to say thanks, but I'd already bought the one thing he had that I needed.
He was also nice enough not to say anything about the Justin work boots I used to wear. Something I won't do anymore, unless it's just over to my buddy's to aggravate him. ;)

Makes perfect sense to me that someone new to kilts would assume the flat part went in the back for sitting.
Maybe leading them over to a book vendor and showing them pics of the way kilts are, in fact, worn would be helpful.
God help me, sometimes its more fun to just let them wander and follow a ways behind and watch the reactions of others and what they do/say about it.

I've piped at a number of weddings where the bridegroom & groomsmen had rented kilts with pleats situated in front.
When I've asked who instructed to wear them in that fashion, it's always been a bride, bride's mom, or female wedding co-ordinator. And the men are always very hesitant to follow my suggestion to make things right.
One one occasion the bride's mom ordered me to turn my pleats to the front as well.
