Having been properly trained in the the wearing of vests/wasitcoats from a young age, I never button the bottom button of a vest unless it's the 3-4 button formal version or a double breasted model. It doesn't matter whether I'm kilted or trousered.
If you do--or do not--no one will care. It's not that big a deal--and quite frankly, I never thought of it before--but since I was taught not to button (and I've noticed many well-dressed men unbuttoned), I don't button.
And it obviously looks good buttoned, witness the good Duke of Rothesay's photo provided by Joseph McLaren above. One thing about ole Charles, he looks pretty snazzy in his clothes.

good points made on both sides~ thanks again, everyone. Think I may just toss a coin to decide each time I put the waistcoat on!

Wow, there's so many people on both sides, it's kinda great to see a question without a "kilt police" answer.

That's because the question is about waistcoats, not kilts.

Since the room is split and I choose not to offend any, I shall have the bottom of my Argyll waistcoat half buttoned...or, would that be half unbuttoned?

I tend to go all buttoned for formal occasions and bottom unbuttoned if casual. Of course, if i put on a few pounds it would prob just be unbuttoned all the time.

I think I might start buttoning the bottum button when the waistcoat is with the kilt... Just because it goes aginst the way I was raised.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
