I'm sad to hear that about Guinness, Lagavulin and Caol Ila...but thank heavens for Laphroig and their entirely wonderful Quarter Cask.

Diageo was created by Guinness.

I have to agree with acaig and I only hope that those who attend will still manage to enjoy themselves despite the obviously rampant commercialism.

I am pretty sure that the local constabulary is not so afraid of insurrection as they are determined to show that they can be tough guys and issue edicts. In my experience, sword bearers are never dangerious, but it sure makes petite bureaucrats feel important to issue threats. And, whoever it is that is banning the little guys (the article is not specific) is probably up to the same thing. Even socialists understand money!
You should know that Diageo owns a whole bunch of stuff--used to own Burger King and Pillsbury as well. My Lord, they're a hydra of a holding company. Wikipedia says they own the following:
Johnnie Walker, Justerini & Brooks (J&B), Bell's, Black & White, Vat 69, Oban, Talisker, Lagavulin, Glen Ord, Glenkinchie, Dalwhinnie, Cragganmore
Throw in Bushmills, and that's a pretty respectable lineup of booze.
But . . . I still take humbrage at their excluding small distillers who pose no threat to them whatsover. I suggest we all show up, take flasks full of other people's scotch, and parade in front of their tents with signs accusing them of abusing the little guys. We could even ride make believe horses and wield make believe blades a la Monty Python to draw attention and drive home the depth of our concern.
Seriously, why not just write a whole bunch of letters to Diageo's HQ and complain. Surely they's see the error of their ways and relent on letting smaller distillers in. they would, in fact, appear quite magnanimous.

The company are now building a new distillery at their current maltings at Roseisle, hoping to open in Spring 2009. This will be one of the largest distilleries in Scotland.
Thanks for the tip- I'll ring my broker on Monday and tell him to buy!

Guys, don't forget that all they are talking about is a farmers-market-type area with local produce, there is after all a whisky tasting area nearby, probably next door to it! It is a shame that no independent distillers are invited though....

I got the feeling from the news coverage of the sword ban that the cops were really trying to point out a difference between UK and US law in as tactful a way as possible. Nowhere in the UK is it legal (or wise) for a member of the public to walk around at a public gathering with a blade longer than 6 inches unless there are special exemptions. The US crowds may not have been aware of this, as it appears to be legal to do this in the US? Hence the police re-iterating what was already the law...
And in the UK, in recent history, sword bearers have proved to be on average ever so slightly unhinged .....

Diageo bought the umbrella group Irish Distillers, which not only owns Bushmills, but also Powers, Paddy and Jamesons, along with specialty brands like Redbreast. Irish Distillers also supply the whiskey to independent bottlers for the likes of Green Spot. In fact, Cooley Distiller is the only whiskey distillery in Ireland NOT owned by Diageo.

Quite correct, my mistake, I had thought that Pernod Ricard sold all of Irish Distillers to Diageo in 2005, when they had only sold Bushmills.
