As a matter of fact, I do need more room.
or
Because I am Scottish on both sides of me family.
or
Because I'm not afraid to show my legs. It's a coward who covers his up with pants.

Thankfully, I finally no longer get the question around the neighborhood, "Special occasion?" or "Are you piping today?"
Depending on my mood, I say one of the following:
+++ I like to honor my Scottish heritage.
+++ They are insanely comfortable.
+++ (if it's a woman) Because pretty women talk to me when I wear them.
+++ (on a pretty day) It seemed like a good idea on such a nice day.
+++ I'm sorry -- that's confidential. (Yes, I really said that once.).

The answer i gave someone today was "Kilts are like shorts on steroids - just think about how freeing shorts can feel.. now multiply that feeling by 20 times"

1. Because I'm a grown man and my mommy no longer dresses me
2. Scottish ancestry
3. Isn't everybody?
4. I didn't get the memo that said we weren't supposed to today
5. I'm taking a survey about how many people really do wanna know what I'm wearing under there
There's more, but usually Guinness has a hand in those responses ;)

A lot of it depends on my mood or how I am asked, but it is pretty standard to give one of these responses. Comfort or Freedom.

More aften than not if I'm asked about the wearing of my kilts, the question is usually "Is that a uniform?" even if I'm wearing a Ghillie shirt and moccasin boots. On those occasions I just shake my head and tell the person it's not a uniform. Then they ask why I'm wearing it if I'm not a piper. I tell them kilts are more comfortable than p*&%s. I guess most people just associate the kilt with pipe bands and don't realise they're part of everyday apparel.

I started off with a Sportkilt, liked it, bought a tank and argyll for Burns Night, found XMTS, discovered that there were people who wore the kilt full time, had ankle surgery and found the kilt was easier that pants to put on over a cast, went full time nearly two years ago.
I live in a small rural county in coastal NC and seldom get asked why? Nearly everyone knows me as the 'guy in the kilt'
