"Good girls ask, but bad girls find out"! Can't take credit for it though, I got it from Funlvnman.

It's when they get a gleam in their eye, you then realize that you may have met a bad girl!!

"I've always wanted to know! What do you scotsmen wear under your kilt!"

Without missing a beat, I matched her voice:

"I've always wanted to know! What do you women wear under your skirt!"

There was dead silence in the meat department of Giant Eagle, until her husband started to giggle. She then fixed him with a death glare and moved on.
I tried a variation of that one time saying, "I would never ask YOU what you're wearing." She told me a thong and demanded an answer. I replied "A gentleman would never tell."

I usually go with the shoes and socks, but I reall liked your response. I'll have to remember that one for future use.

My usual answer is "My Boots" If the question is phrased "What's worn under a kilt" I answer "It's all Warren (my name) under the kilt." Or "Nothings worn, it's all in perfect working order"

    Same, but different.

When I was in Dumfries earlier this year I was asked on more than one occasion "Are you a true Scotsman today, Sir?"

My answer as I strode away was always the same - "Good Grief no - I'm an Englishman!"

We were having dinner with friends last night and one woman asked "the question." I responded "Shoes and socks." It took her a few moments to realize what I'd said, though the others caught on immediately.

That led to a discussion on how we kilt wearers respond to "the question" and I gave them many of the responses posted here. For some reason all of them thought it was OK to ask and did not consider it rude - yet when I asked them if I could ask women the same question they thought that would be insulting. Go figure.

The mystical double standard of our society... A woman's unwarranted requests on a man is ok.. Even the rude comments not related to kilts... But if the tables are turned it's sexual harassment..... I always wondered why it's that way...

I think it is because (yeah, this will prob sound sexist, get over it) men are (supposed to be) raised to have a certain respect for women. That line seems thin and gray for some actions done to women (since the same action has different effects with different women) but it would be a very large line to cross to actually press charges against a woman and destroy her life for pressing the matter. Granted, some men dance that line all the time, and they usually will have to pay for it in the end, but to not send the women folk into a downward spiral for wanting to sneak a peek, well, that might be one of the last vestiges of chivalry left in the world.

Sorta like the button which stated "Under my clothes I'm completely naked!"

I gave the "Hose and shoes" answer once, and the questioner repeated, "Yes, but what do you really wear under your kilt? My answer that time was "Me". That ended the conversation.

My husband usually gives one of three replies, depending on the gender of the person asking and the tone/attitude of the question:

    "Socks and boots."
"If you want to know that bad, buy your own."
    "My wife's property."
