At art college we were often advised to look at our drawing/creation in the mirror, it was a very good way to see things slightly removed from the actual artist, the fact the image was reversed as well made us look at the image in a more critical manner, and made the errors all the more obvious. The idea of using the mirror to check pleating patterns seems very admirable.

That is probably a real effect, a result of the reflective properties of the mirror coating over the visual spectrum. Or in my room, it might be the layer of dust on the mirror's surface!

This does not appear to be asymmetrical to me either. I would pleat to sett also. The issue is the size of the sett. If the set is say 8 inches it not a big issue. If the set is 5 1/2 or smaller you will end up wit either 20 pleats of 40 pleats. Its your choice. either way it will be a beautiful and striking kilt.

I'm afraid I've been lax! I should have posted this some time ago. If anyone is curious as to how my project turned out:

That's a fine-looking kilt, and I'm sure you'll wear it with pride tot he games next month.

How deep are the pleats? Wide a really wide sett, my guess is they're pretty deep.
