Then when the pin snags, all that happens is that the pin slides off the magnet backer with no damage to the kilt at all.
That's a good idea. Got pics of the modification? Do you pin a base to the kilt, then magnet the decoration to the base, or put one magnet on either side of the fabric and dispense entirely with the pin?

First I remove the pin from the back of the item and then sand it smooth. Next, I epoxy a stainless steel washer on the back. The rare earth magnet goes under the apron in it's holder. Pictures forthcoming.

And for a blanket pin with a difference:
Beaded pins from FlamingoKilts.
Sorry I don't have the ordering info on the website yet, just too many other irons in the fire!

I'm one of those "overly anxious" people. I don't wear a kilt pin as I do not want it to get snagged on something and tear a hole in my apron. But, I love accessories, and a rare earth magnet backed pin is starting to sound like the best of both worlds!

What are you doing that might cause the pin to get snagged on something? I've seldom had a problem with this happening.
Just relax!

I always wear a kilt pin. I definitely think it is an important part of traditional highlandwear even though it serves no real practical purpose.

I have a silver dogwood pin that I bought from ebay that I really like, and a brass stand of 'pipes that I sometimes wear, and one of the clan crested claymores that I never use anymore.
When kilted, I'm always pinned.
