I got started on a bit of a whim. I saw Sport Kilts in a bicycle catalog I used to get and ordered one, then two more. Eventually I decided I wanted something more substantial and eventually found my way to the Xkilt instructions. I am not a bit Scottish, and only a tiny bit Irish(I know, I know), but I just wanted one and now I have several and fabric for more plus a wish list.

Have always known of my family heritage through Piper/Murray clan.
When my wife got involved in activities of the Scott clan I told her I would do anything to help her, but I would NOT wear a kilt.
It didn't take her long.

I'm surprised! I thought there'd be more people like this. I got my first kilt (also from Geoffrey) to help at the clan tent in 1988. In the mid-90's I was in a small pipe band. We bought our own kilts (my 2nd) through a bargain basement plan and it certainly showed. That kilt is not longer in existance as far as I know. It fit like a set of drapes.

why wear a kilt
Ever since I was a little boy I wanted a kilt as some of my friends wore the kilt to school my mother would not get me one as she said it was too dear and I would not wear it anyway so after a while I started doing little jobs for people to get some money Iwent to the Barras market in Glasgow and bought an ex army HLIkilt for £5 bought a boy scout sporran hose and flashes I was very shy at that age and wanted to wear something under the kilt so I went to Frasers store to buy underwear hoping I would be served by a man , no such luck!so I had to ask for girls school knickers very embarrasing!! all worth while as I went on holiday and wore the kilt all the time I do not bother with the underwear now but Istill wear the kilt everyday

My father first met his own dad when I was about ten. My mother had done much research and interrogation to find the man.
Once we found him, we began doing some genealogical research for medical / genetic reasons. ( I have genetic eye problems and My mother wanted to know how it might progress as I aged. )
Well, the family turned out to be of Scottish decent with several crossed branches. My mother's family too had Scottish roots.
I fell in love with the concept of heritage and family beyond my own nuclear "village." The idea that our family was so large and divers with such a rich history fascinated me.
It didn't hurt that the music touches me in a way I cannot even begin to describe. Even at eleven - years - old, I was moved to tears by the pipes. It somehow strikes me on a spiritual / soul level.
Anyway, I am rambling...
My first kilt was a TANK from Geoffrey Taylor. (Ancient Campbell 16 oz) I was 16. I wore this for "formal events" and games. I always had a flair for the dramatic and had no fear of the "extra attention."
Well, 22 years later I still wear the kilt. I too don't wear it as much as I would like, but my wife is actually encouraging me to go about kilted more often. (I will of course be honoring that request.. ;)
