Aged 8 or 9, at school when living in Scotland. Kilts were not part of the uniform, but we were sometimes invited to wear them at special events.

I was a late starter. First wore a kilt at age 50 to a friend's 50th birthday bash.

A borrowed one for Halloween in my mid-30's, a belted plaid ("great kilt") for reenacting a couple of years later, my first modern kilt of my own as a 40th birthday present from my family. That was 14 years ago....

Unlike Jock and Sandy I was a late bloomer-- chalk it up to post-war austerity-- I received my first new kilt when I was 8 years old.

I was 52, my wife and I had returned from a trip to London and Scotland and I wanted something appropriate for a formal. Now I am active in our local Scottish Heritage Society and have enjoyed getting into our family history and how we came to be here...

I guess I was about 11 years old when I first donned the kilt. I wore it when playing the pipes back then. I gave up both the pipes and the kilt. When my twin brother was married in 2002 when I was 36 we all wore the kilt (we rented). That night I commented "Why haven't I done this before?" Then I guess it was about 2005 at the age of 39 that I started wearing the kilt a few times a week to work building it up to everyday wear.
