You spoke about subverting expectation, and your students could well expect you to wear a kilt whether or not they have actually seen you wearing one. You would know, I suspect, but we cannot. So again, if they expect you to wear a kilt, do so; if not, wear whatever you like. You know that you will look really good, regardless...

CDNsushi, Well I've been known to complain about people responding to posts without actually reading them so you know, the beam in my own eye, etc. On my first reading I was more focused on trying to figure out if your students are actually Japanese or if you were teaching in a school for western kids- since they are Japanese I would carefully heed the earlier advice received about doing the Scots thing properly, if you go that way. There is no one more conscious than the Japanese about the right way to do things, and so you are living in a culture where people deliver insults by displaying slightly inferior flower arrangements... Hope you will post suitable photos of the ceremony also!

Okay.... So, I've posted a poll up in the "Off Topic" section... You can see what both outfits look like and vote for the one you think is best...

There still IS a complete NULL option that I didn't include, and that is a conventional, regular, dark suit. <yaaaawwnnn>...

Anyway, linky to other thread is here.

How would they know what's correct and what's not regarding Scottish attire? Still, try to look correct anyway.

What about a tweed sports coat with light coloured trousers, if you want to get away from dark colours?

A previous poster -Jock? - indicated that the Japanese appear to be impressed with Highland dress and tend to know how it should (and should not) be worn. Apparently they pick up on details that most non-Scots would never notice.
