This shouldn't be a problem.
If I lost interest in a valuable I would just sell it and buy something new and exciting with the money...

Perhaps I have worn the kilt for too long, perhaps its because most Scots(that actually own a kilt) only wear one tartan, perhaps the kilt is too close to my roots and perhaps it is just me. However, try as I might, I cannot relate to many of the above replies. I do see a phrase, or six, that nearly describes how I feel, but not quite.
So lets try attacking this from another direction. No I don't get a buzz when I don the kilt. No I don't want to wear other tartans other than my own. No I don't understand why others do want to wear a multitude of tartans. No I do not find the kilt more comfortable than any other form of clothing. No I do not want to show off.
Yes I do get mildly upset if I see the kilt worn badly. Yes I am mildly flattered to see non Scots wearing the kilt. Yes I like to wear new things------at my age I have nearly forgotten that one!Yes I have a deep rooted pride in Scotland and its part of British and world history. Yes there are things that some Scots of our past need to be ashamed of.
So no, I am afraid I still have not been able to come up with a sensible answer to your question. Perhaps, maybe, it is a deep satisfaction that the kilt is instantly recognisable as Scots--- Highland Scots------ and so far, that thought and yes, thrill, has been with me for a day or two over 70 years. That is the best I can do, but somehow, that is not really what I want to say.

I think I know what you mean Jock.......
"how long does the thrillf a new kilt last?"
I'd say for me, the answer could be;
"As long as the thrill of a new woman" (!)
I have one kilt, and have had my one and only woman for 32 years.
I have no desire to 'trade her in'.
I am just as happy with my kilt, and don't feel any need for anything else.
If one day, it gets a bit tatty for special occasions, I might get another one the same.
(kilt that is, not wife!)
Seems to me there are different approaches to wearing a kilt;
One approach appears to be the 'peacock' thing, whereas another approach seems to be the "always the same" thing. ...where I fit in!

Wow, well said Jock. I share your sentiments completely. It's almost as if you took the same words right out of my mouth. You are absolutely spot on with every viable point you made. Especially with reference to one of your final comments, "Perhaps, maybe, it is a deep satisfaction that the kilt is instantly recognisable as Scots--- Highland Scots------ ". Well said Jock, well said.
Yours aye,

I, like Jock, can't really relate to the topic, though I suppose for different reasons.
My kilt can't "fade into the collection" simply because I don't any collection for it to fade into! I only wear the one kilt.
I never get tired of seeing that tartan (muted Drummond of Perth). The first time I saw a kilt of this exact tartan was in the 1980's when the Beach Cities Pipe Band wore them. At the time I thought they were the loveliest kilts I'd ever seen. The Beach Cities Pipe Band evolved into the LA Scots Pipe Band which still wears this tartan.
I liked that tartan so much that I had my own kilt made in it, though at the time I was playing in the band and had a band issued kilt. Now I have full tartan hose to match and a fly plaid to boot.
My appreciation for this tartan was renewed recently when I got a blue-green tweed Day jacket. The tartan's colours are wonderfully transformed when the jacket is switched from black to this tweed.

There is something to be said for selecting tartans to purchase for personal reasons. I've been wearing the kilt for over 10 years and, maybe because I don't wear it every day, the thrill has still not gone away for me at all. But, the addition of new accessories (sporrans, jackets, etc.) may also play into keeping the wardrobe from getting stale, too.
