I would say you can wear anything you like. Polo shirt and denim jacket works fine for shabby casual. I like collarless "grandad" shirts. A plain old-fashioned waistcoat is a great addition to your wardrobe for the summer as it gives you a couple of pockets.
Socks! Different colours are a must. Buy lots!
Shoes: a pair of Doc Marten shoes are comfortable. I found a pair of trainers that almost look like they were designed after ghillie brogues and are great for those days when boots are just too heavy!
If you really want to get the best wear out of your kilt you need to be prepared to throw caution and "tradition" to the wind...
I'll be in London later this week. Look out for a big, hairy Scot around Islington/Camden! ;c)
