some good ones, but my best bang for your buck is McLellands (all variations)

It may not be the least expensive but hands down my favorite is Laphroaig!

Since this has turned into yet another "my favorite single malt" thread, I'd be interested in the OP clarifying his original question.

AA - I believe each of us have our own opinions on what is best Scotch for the money. To be able to definitively answer the hypothetical question posed would be impossible. Long live the Distillers who keep us happy.

I happened to be shopping for a bottle of whisky for a friend and the owner of the store recommended a speyside named Tamdhu. I have never heard of this particular label, but he sang its praises most eloquently. Plus at $24.99 per, I had to try it. I must say, most enjoyable, and the best 10 year old I have ever had - clean, fruity and refreshing with little aftertaste. All things considered, it's my new favorite.

I suppose that comes down to the definition of "reasonable", or "affordable", but personally I like Glenfiddich, 12 year old, single malt. Good stuff for around 20-25 dollars a mickey bottle (375ml).

For our clan tent at Estes this year I happened to pick up something I had never seen before. I was at Total Beverage here in Westminster and they had one that had the same name as the island that is our clan home, Lismore. I looked at the box it was in and just kind of thought about picking it up for fun. Then I looked at the price. The club price was $16.98. Yes, I picked it up and fully expected to dislike it. It was nice and several of the people that stopped by tried it and liked it also. I have put that one on my every day list!!

I've never heard of it, but at $17 a bottle I'll certainly give it a try!
You can barely buy cheap plonk for that price

Here is what I found on Lismore:
Distillery: Lismore
Style: Single Malt
Release: Unspecified
Age: Unspecified
Alcohol: 40% abv.
Region: Scotland, Highlands
Bottled For: Distillery
This inexpensive (~$19) single malt Highland is reputed to be a vatting of 6 and 8 year old lenrothes. Good everyday drinker. Lismore is bottled by Wm Lundie & Company

If you aren't set on a single malt, the Famous Grouse is quite inexpensive and, to my mind, quite good, especially at the price.
