Head-wear was forbidden in their dress code as well. I pointed it out and he said that it's "cultural clothing" and is an exception.
This actually is another thing I've run into. The traditional garb of cultures that are not white is considered cultural, while the kilt is looked at as a costume. So be prepared for that. How it makes any sense at all, I don't know- but to some people, it does.

A Stillwater 'heavyweight' in Black Watch would be a good one for this project. It was my first kilt, and although the picture below is not formal, you will see that it dresses up pretty well.

@McFarkus, thanks for the picture! I'll definatly go with the Stillwater Heavyweight now.
Thanks to everyone who has replyed! Keep the suggestions coming. Also, with a "normal" tuxedo outfit one generally tries to match his dates dress color somehow. What should I do with a kilt outfit?

Do this! It'll look SMOKIN. There are a couple examples around...but it'll work a little bit the other way 'round, in that your tartan will stand out A LOT vs the small splashes of color in our traditional formal attire. Pick several potential tartans from the rental shop (check with Matt Newsome at the tartan museum, btw), then check with your date, to see what color dress she might like to wear. Green dress? Green-based tartan. Blue dress? You get the idea. Want to really stand out? Royal Stewart, and make sure your date is the prototypical "girl in the red dress". The bottom line is, she may only have one dress, so find several tartans you like...this will be an area of compromise in your color choices. If she is wearing a black dress, or white, a simple tartan sash will do, in silk.
Concerned that the local two-bit authoritarians are going to complain about your kilt? Wear your family tartan. When the fan swings your way, your expression of your culture will deflect any stink aimed in your direction.
Show your colors!
...And don't ask for permission.
Leave the sgian dubh at home.

First, I think the idea of wearing the kilt to your prom is great. My son tells me that some proms will not allow someone without a "formal" outfit like a tux. If that is so then you will have to go formal. If not then look at some of the photos of Prince Charles otherwhere seen on this site. You can look really sharp without spending a lot. As to coordination with your date: the tie can be coordinated with her gown and a pocket handkerchief if you use one.

If you google Prince Charlie outfit you can find a lot of good photos to show school authorities that it is a properly formal outfit.. Here's one I like showing dark hose rather than cream hose. Also the Isle of Skye tartan is one of my favorites.

After some browsing on the internet, I found a web site called "The Scotland Yard" ,originally I had intended to rent the PC jacket, vest, and dress sporran from the Tartans Museum in Franklin, but they only have a package deal. The Scotland Yard have a option to just rent the vest, PC and sporran. Has anyone had any dealings with this site? Would this be a good idea? After all, if I have my own kilt, hose, (dont need a sgian dubh), and I would need to get my own bow tie to match my date, it doesnt make much sense to spend money for all these things.
Oh, any ideas on how to present a good argument to my girlfriend that the kilt is a viable option? Unfortunately she is one of the .00001 percent of women that does not find the kilt attractive.

Sorry dude, but prom AIN'T about you (it's a bit like a mini-wedding- the girl is always right). If your girlfriend hates the kilt you have but two options.
1) find new girlfriend who likes the kilt
2) p@nts.
Sorry mate, but nothing is worse than a cheesed-off prom date who just spent 4 hours on her hair and $$$$$$$$$$ on her dress.
On the upside, if you DO want to find a different girl, the kilt will help

Here's a recent news item you might like to read, and take as an example of how to respond to poorly thought out dress codes and narrow-minded administrators. When in doubt a preemptive strike works well. The one who is not prepared or uses half-way measures usually loses.
