Sporran. Dig around the forums here, and dig around your local area...try to find someone that builds them from real leather, on the premises. You should be able to find something like that for about (guessing here) 60-75 pounds, tho I'm not sure of the exchange rate...I'm thinking of a sporran I picked up for under 100USD, beautiful leather, two tassels, custom made, very durable. Should be plenty of things similar, where you are.
If you think that a sgian would be a nice accent, go for it...but it will likely be turned away from bars and sporting events. The sgian brew would be a better choice for both.
By the way, most sgians you'll find are going to be cheaply made in a third world country...or rather, the important part (the blade) will be. Find out where the blade, sheath, etc. are manufactured BEFORE you buy.

It's great to hear from a fellow student!
A sporran or a sgian dhu ,what ever one you choose, would make great a gift.
If you are looking for a dress sporran I think there are some vintage seal dress sporrans on ebay currently with very low starting bids.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm going to go with a sporran (maybe save a sgian for when he actually has a kilt and maybe a big birthday or important date or something. Now to get searching.
O'Callaghan, he's studying at Glasgow, I'm studying at Strathclyde (frequent tiffs about which one's better, but they've without a doubt got a nicer tartan. I actually can't wait for him to get his kilt, I'm probably more excited about it than he is) Also Glasgow's not that bad. It isn't brilliant but the only hassle I've ever had is drunken men asking the way to buchannan bus station a touch too amourously for my liking.
Thanks again for the advice, I'll check in and tell you how it goes
