Indeed. Though I'm still not sure what I think of the gentleman's outfit, it is an interesting use of tartan...

    ...on the other hand:

Not sure how much good that would do in your shooting situation, but it is nice to see something out of the ordinary. Thanks too Jock for sharing the other shooting photos with us. Wish I could get there and go on a deer stalking or pheasant shoot with you lads, looks like great fun.
This tartan in its "weathered" form is the only "weathered" one I have ever seen in natural surroundings and indeed it is actually very effective camouflage. It was quite interesting to note that the plain greens and plain browns of the more standard shooting attire stood out even at a range of some 200 yards or more, but that tartan did blend well with the surroundings at about 100 yards.

Out on the hill where camouflage is more use, I have no doubts that a "weathered" tartan of this style would indeed be very effective. Would I wear a tartan shooting suit, particularly as mine would not look a lot different? Well no, I think not.

If you'll forgive another thread hijack, that is a fine looking family you have there!!

And ties! In Seattle, people rarely wear ties to work, but for hunting?

I think that is a hunting style I might enjoy...

Well thank you! Yes, there are two nephews, two cousins, one brother, three sons and me on parade! And yes I am very happy and proud to say that we all bear the same surname. Ties are standard dress for this sort of pastime and as far as I am concerned anyone not wearing a tie without very good reason, whilst shooting on my shoots does not get to fire a shot!

Just a wee reminder that hunting in the UK is usually done with horses and hounds and as we are in the UK we are talking SHOOTING here!

Jock, I notice that all of the shooting party are wearing "gum boots" except your good self. It appears you are wearing shoes/brogues with what I refer to as a "golf flap". Is this correct and what is the correct term for these type of shoes? Love to see the tie out in the field, that is what I call traditional.

"Gum boots" or "wellies" as they are generally known are the general purpose footwear for these events. The shoes that I wear are known as "hill shoes" and as I know the ground fairly well and after 6 decades I know where all the wet places and short cuts are! Also I just find them more comfortable to be out and about in.

I have just read the old thread and there I say that the flaps are detachable which in some cases they are, but I have not seen those about for some time. The ones in the picture have non detachable flaps which actually is much handier.

    "Hill shoes"
