I think the concensus is that a leather sporran strap is ALWAYS preferable for day (though there are those out there that do wear a plain chain for day wear). For eveningwear, it kind of depends on preference and the type of sporran. If you're wearing a fur sporran, you'd probably stick with leather. If your sporran has a fancy silver cantle, then a fancy silver chain to go with it is a nice touch.

When you refer to evening wear, I am reading it as formal wear. If that is the case, then I usually wear a black leather sporran belt if I am wearing my long goat hair sporran, if I wear my seal skin sporran I usually go for the chain sporran strap. I do however consider if I am going to be dancing at the formal event as I find an all leather sporran strap more comforatable to dance with and it's easier to move the sporran to the side if close dancing is required.

As with most highland wear, unless you are wearing your kilt backwards or way too low/too high (or wearing white hose ), no one is going to inspect you too closely and go tut, tut, tut or call the dreaded kilt police.

Just wear what you have with pride and confidence and your on a winner

So yes I'm referring to evening wear as formal. I recall a couple of forum discussions about the wear that chain straps cause over time on the kilt. My dress sporran has a pewter cantle. It seems that leather is ok for evening and more comfortable especially for dancing. Even though I've been around on XMTS a short time, I've got the message about white/ecru hose . (Ok, I have a pair, but rest assured I'm not stuck on them as I move into black and next purchase... Loden!) Interesting that the person who sold them to me said, "They are more 'formal'". Well, you guys are pretty clear that be not necessarily the case!
