Aye, only as a last resort. I mostly make these for the art of it. They are fully functional though.

Wow!! Somehow, I missed the pics of the finished product... That came out beautifully! I love the 3 different color tones! And if you don't mind me asking, where do you get your nails? I've used furniture nails, which look nice enough, but the ones that you've gotten are beautiful!

Thanks Nighthawk, this targe is hanging in my office at home for now. It's really kinda of addictive making these things. I'm starting to think about new designs and getting an itch to start a new project.
As for the nails, they are all "old brass" finish upholstery nail. I ordered them from a online upholstery wholesale outlet. They have many dome and shank sizes to choose from. I'll look them up and send you a link.

The Targe looks fantastic. All you need now is a pair of hounds to stand beside you and you would be ready for anything.

    Fantabulous!

I know I'm pretty late on the thread here but that is an awesome targe! I bet you wore a hammer out tooling that bad boy. Great work!

Thanks, All together I have about 25 hours of work in this targe. The tooling probably took about 15 of those. My hammer was in agony, but I enjoyed every minute of it. This targe felt "right" as I made it.

I do have an itch to do a new design, so I'll I may find some time to get started on that in a week or two.

I'm planning on doing the same! I need one that's more combat-worthy than the lovely, decorative one I made before. I think my next will not have a lot of tooling in it- just some creative nail work. So- did you see the improvements that the folks in Albannach made to mine?

Nighthawk! Are you trying to make me jealous? It's working. Going to look at your thread now! Albannach is by far my favorite band these days.

I saw them most recently at the WNC Celtic Music Festival back in June. And loved every second!!
