    .

Sir Malcolm is wearing a detachable winged collar, white bow tie ( of marcella or pique ) and the neck ribbon and badge of a Baronet of the United Kingdom.

Many thanks to everyone for the replies. Thus far I'm thinking I can make two outfits out of this, which would be formal and very dressy respectively.

    #1 formal evening attire
    (aka the majority recommendation)

silver plated cantle horsehair sporran, fold down collar white formal shirt (with black button studs and cufflinks), black bow tie (self-tied of course), black cap-toe oxfords (with "mirror" shine)

#2 formal day or dressy evening attire
(aka a modified page out of Alan Cumming's book)

metal studded black leather hunting sporran, white dress shirt (with cufflinks), long tie, black cap-toe oxfords (with "mirror" shine)

A few more considerations for option #2.

    - Would anyone recommend upping the ante with the matching MacQuarrie Modern tie or would sticking with a solid colour be better?
    - Is the hunting sporran (no cantle) dressy enough or would I need to upgrade to my metal cantle 3 tassel fur sporran? I think the horsehair sporran is a bit too much for this one...
    - I also have mirror polished parade boots (instead of cap-toe oxfords) if I'm to follow Alan Cumming

In regards to MoR's comment on my flashes, yes they are as cheap as they come A friend has promised to knit me some garter ties but she is a new mother, so I'm not going to rush her. I will, however, pass on the suggestion for yellow...

I would advise against wearing a tartan tie with a kilt-- as Jock Scot and a host of others have pointed out, it's tartan overkill, especially when worn with a tartan kilt and tartan waistcoat. I'd recommend joining the Royal British Legion (as I understand it, membership is open to anyone) and wear their tie, or contact Jock Scot and see about obtaining an Army Benevolent Society tie-- again a "British" tie that can be worn without causing adverse comment. Other than that, stick with stripes and solids (your college tie is always a safe choice) and you'll look fine.

The hunting sporran is more than acceptable for dressy evening wear; I usually wear the same sporran day and evening, and only trot out the silver mounted seal skin if it's a formal (ie: black tie) event.

To my eye, you would overload with a tartan tie. A little negative space would balance the outfit, and not have knee to neck in tartan, like you were stuck up to the neck in some kind of quicksand of tartan. I also agree about getting the more traditional garters in place of the flashes shown, they just do not seem to rise to the level of the rest of the outfit.
Otherwise your No. 1 & 2 options sound like winners.

    Question pics

Alright, I've taken everyone's generous suggestions and put it all together. Let me know what you think? Can I pull any of these off?

    #1 formal evening attire

    #2 formal day wear
    (hunting sporran, solid blue tie)

    #2.1 dressy evening attire
    (formal sporran, ABF tie)

Honestly, I think you can pull any/all of them off. I prefer #2 most, but they all look good on thier own.

Stunning CMcG, particularily like the ABF tie photo and the shine on the shoes is a credit to you. Great cantle on the hair sporran and very much like the kilt pin position

I've got to say...I stand corrected!

It looks so much better to my eyes in these pictures than the earlier view laid out on the floor!

My favorite is with the hair sporran and bow tie (pic #1). Well Done!!!

It appears the correct way to complete the outfit was to put you in it.

All of those pics looks good. Well done!

Good enough to marry a tv star

    Well Done CMcG.

I agree with whoever said they all look good... Surely The MacGregor didn't marry the only woman on TV who likes the kilt...
